When the world is moving faster with every passing day, what is the point of waiting at the toll booth?

We do not know if that is exactly what someone might have thought, but when the Government of India announced FASTag, that surely answered the question. So, what is FASTag?

FASTag is a prepaid electronic system for collecting tolls on highways. developed and managed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the system uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

The NHAI introduced FASTag on 1st October 2017, and from February 2021, it was made compulsory for all vehicles to have it while crossing a highway toll booth. So, if you have recently owned a car, you are possibly planning a road trip with your loved ones. If the trip includes highway transit, make sure you buy a FASTag. Also, do not forget to buy car insurance for your car.

Car insurance protects the driver and their family in unexpected circumstances, making it essential to have. To avail of your car insurance, you may go online and check the quick and easy process for buying a car insurance or car insurance renewal online with Tata AIG. With options of rapid car insurance claim settlement, cashless repairs, servicing, maintenance, and crucial features like roadside assistance, Tata AIG is one of the most preferred motor insurance carriers in the Indian market.

How Does FASTag Work?

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India which allows drivers to pay tolls electronically without stopping and waiting in long queues. Here is how FASTag works:

  • A driver purchases a FASTag from a bank or an authorised agency and links it to their vehicle's registration number.

  • The FASTag is a small, RFID-enabled sticker affixed to the vehicle's windshield.

  • As the vehicle approaches a toll plaza, the RFID reader at the toll plaza reads the FASTag sticker, and the toll amount is deducted automatically from the driver's linked bank account or prepaid wallet.

  • The toll payment is processed and verified within seconds, and the barrier at the toll plaza lifts automatically, allowing the vehicle to pass through without stopping.

  • The driver can view their transaction history and balance through the FASTag mobile app linked to their bank account or prepaid wallet.

FASTag has several benefits, such as reducing traffic congestion at toll plazas, saving time, and improving the overall toll collection process.

What are the Benefits of Having FASTag?

Here are a bunch of benefits of using FASTag -

  • Quick and easy toll payments

  • The ditching of traffic at toll

  • Easy to recharge online without any fuss

  • Long validity of almost 5 years

  • Paperless transaction

  • Track of vehicle records brings transparency

  • No runaways and disputes of payments

  • SMS alerts

  • Cash back incentives

  • Toll statements can be downloaded online

FASTag Fees & Penalties

FASTag issuance fees are set by each bank and may vary from bank to bank. However, the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has set a maximum FASTag charge of ₹100.

Penalty: As mentioned above, the government has made FASTag mandatory from 15th December 2019. If the FASTag is collected by the due date, vehicles with a FASTag will be charged double the toll. Also, the toll charges are double the normal amount for people who wish to pay in cash. Therefore, it makes sense to be smart and have a FASTag for your car while driving on Indian highways.

How to Get FASTag Immediately?

If you need to get a FASTag immediately, there are a few ways to do so:

Visit an authorised bank or an issuing agency: Many banks and authorised agencies offer FASTag services, and you can visit their branches to purchase a FASTag. You will need to carry your vehicle's registration certificate (RC) and valid identity proof (such as an Aadhaar card or driving licence). After submitting the necessary documents, you can get a FASTag issued immediately.

Apply online through the issuer's website: Many FASTag issuers have a website where you can apply online for a FASTag. You will need to upload a scanned copy of your vehicle's RC and valid identity proof. After completing the online application, you can pay through net banking or a debit/credit card, and the FASTag will be delivered to your address within a few days. Some issuers also offer the option of getting the FASTag delivered to your doorstep immediately, but this may involve an additional cost.

Get it at the toll plaza: Some toll plazas also offer the option of getting a FASTag immediately. You can approach the dedicated lane for FASTag issuance at the toll plaza and provide the necessary documents to get a FASTag issued.

It is important to note that you need to activate the FASTag before using it at a toll plaza. After receiving the FASTag, you can activate it by linking it to your bank account or prepaid wallet through the issuer's mobile app or website. But if you are on the road and almost approaching the toll plaza without a FASTag and you want to get FASTag immediately, it may be difficult. The only way of getting a FASTag instantly is through temporary booths at the National Highway toll plaza.
