The engine is the most crucial component of the vehicle. The function of the automobile engine is to convert fuel energy into mechanical power. The power generated is transferred to the wheels that help in vehicle movement.

Internal combustion engines are of various types. One such type is the V series engine, which was first invented in 1889 and used in aeroplanes and ships because of its compact size. However, now there are various V-type engine cars available in the market.

This blog will help in understanding more about the V-shape engine, its working and its types

What is a V Engine in a Car?

V engine, also titled as a V-shaped engine, is an internal combustion engine type in which the cylinders are placed in a V pattern. In this type of engine, two cylinders are generally arranged at a 60 or 90-degree angle.

The arranged cylinders form two rows or banks, making them smaller or more compact than other types of engines. The formed angle helps in enhancing the overall efficiency of the engine.

These kinds of engines are available in different cylinder configurations like V2, V4, V8, etc. These engines are used in trucks, SUVs, motorcycles and more.

Types of V Engines

There are different types of V-series engines based on the cylinder used. Some of the standard V types of engines are:

V2 Engine: A V2 engine is also known as a V-twin cylinder. This type of engine uses two-cylinder chambers. The working principle of this engine was first used in automobiles of Daimler Stahlradwagen in 1889. This type of engine requires less space to fit, so it is generally used in motorcycles.

V4 Engine: This type of internal combustion engine is rarely used in automobiles because of its complex structure. It uses four cylindrical chambers placed at 90 degrees, which helps in enhancing performance. However, the various components involved make the assembly of the engine very complex.

V6 Engine: This is the most common type of engine layout involving six-cylinder chambers. Two sets of three cylinders are connected with each other at an angle of 60, 90, or 120 degrees. These engines are shorter, compact, and lighter. Further, they offer higher fuel efficiency.

V8 Engine: V8 engines are the most loved and used engine layout. This engine first came to light in 1903 after the success of the V2 engines. It uses 8 cylindrical chambers and two sets of 4-cylinder chambers connected at a 90-degree angle using a crankshaft. This engine is considered the most rigid and generates high combustion power.

V12 Engine: Last on the list is the V12 engine, which employs 12-cylinder chambers. These engines are considered the highest horsepower-generating engines, which is why they are employed in aircraft, ships, military vehicles, etc. In this type of engine, two sets of 6 cylinders are placed at a 60-degree angle. The first V12 engine was used in Rolls-Royce's Phantom-III.

How Does V Engine Work?

The working of the V engine is somewhat similar to that of the gasoline-powered four-stroke engine. The cylinder pulls the fuel and air into the chamber. The pulled air and fuel are compressed, and the spark plug is ignited to create a force or power.

The force created moves the piston downward. The piston then releases the stored gas and moves upward again. The cycle continues to repeat in different cylinders at different times for smooth power delivery or supply.

Advantages of V Type Engine in Cars

Some of the common advantages of V-shape engines are:

  • The V-type internal combustion engine configuration can be used in a range of applications, such as trucks, motorcycles, military vehicles, and aircraft.

  • The V-shaped engine's aerodynamics are better due to its smaller or compact size.

  • Another advantage of the V-shape engine is it transmits more power to the flywheel from the engine because of its smaller crankshafts.

  • Lastly, this type of engine configuration generates more torque due to these vehicles performing better on rough terrains.

Disadvantages of V Type Engine in Cars

Some of the common disadvantages of V engines are:

  • The engine has a complex design and assembly, which makes it difficult for automobile manufacturers to build.

  • Another disadvantage in V engine configuration is cooling issues.

  • Due to more components, the engine becomes quite heavy.

  • V engines are expensive compared to other engines. Hence, the car that uses V engines falls in the luxury category.

  • Lastly, these engines are less fuel efficient compared to other engines available in the market.

Conclusion

The V engines are employed in many high end vehicles like Mercedes Benz S Class, Ferrari 812 GTS and more. It is also used in pickup trucks, SUVs, marine outboards, racing cars and more.

The reason for its widespread usage is efficient power generating capacity. These engines can generate power effortlessly and quickly. However, due to its complex structure, its maintenance is quite expensive.

Need For Car Insurance Policy

Individuals who own high-end vehicles should consider investing in a standalone own-damage policy or comprehensive car insurance policy. These policies provide protection to insured vehicles in case of damage or loss.

The comprehensive four-wheeler insurance policy also advances vehicle protection by offering voluntary add-ons like engine security, tyre security, zero depreciation cover, and more. Tata AIG has different four-wheeler insurance plans for vehicle owners, catering to their specific needs.

FAQS

Why is the V engine more powerful?

Due to the presence of a small crankshaft, these engines transmit more power to the flywheel from the engine, making it more potent than any other engine.

What is V6 V8 V10 V12?

These all are the type of v engine.

What is the V engine?

The internal combustion engine that forms a V shape using a cylinder placed at a 60 or 90-degree angle is called a V-shaped engine. It is the most powerful engine configuration and is used mostly in high-end vehicles.
