As one of the few countries that share the same border with India, Bhutan is a prime vacation spot for many Indian travellers and the perfect place to soak up some culture. Its glorious snow-capped mountains, lush terrains, and picturesque villages paint this eastern Himalayan kingdom as a mythical paradise.
However, if this is your first time visiting Bhutan, knowing where to start can be challenging. Bhutan's 'high-value, low-impact' tourism culture requires you to carefully plan your trip as it limits the number of visitors that can enter the country at a given time.
In this blog, we will discuss the best time to travel to Bhutan, the best seasons and months, the places you can visit, and the country's climate. We have also provided a table at the end, compiling all this information for a quick glance. So read on to find out the best time to go to Bhutan!
When Is The Best Time To Visit Bhutan From India?
According to most travellers, October is the best time to visit Bhutan. This is further exemplified by the country receiving about 75% of its international travellers during this month. The Spring season (March to May) and the Autumn season (September to November) are also considered peak seasons for travellers.
The mildly warm temperature and drier weather where the air is fresh and clear with sunny skies make it favourable for most international travellers. Moreover, the country hosts various festivals like Paro and Punakha Tshechu in Spring and the Thimphu Tshechu, the country's biggest festival held at the capital in Autumn.
Here is a simple breakdown of the best time to travel to Bhutan for various scenarios:
For the Best Climate: As stated, it would be October. If you plan on visiting during this month, ensure that you book your tickets at least three months in advance, as Bhutan only allows for a certain number of visitors at a time.
For the Best Climate But Want to Avoid Crowds: If you still want to enjoy the country's pristine weather but want to avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting during May or November.
Most Affordable Time: If you are on a budget and want to save as much as possible during your trip, consider travelling in June or December. You can enjoy low-season prices while still having favourable weather.
For an In-Depth Culture-Themed Trip: If you want to explore Bhutan's traditional arts, such as painting, carpentry, weaving and papermaking or experience the Bhutanese living philosophy, any time of the year can be appropriate, even Bhutan's rainy season.
You can also visit during the off-season to enjoy the lowest prices and get the most value for your money during your trip.
The Best Months to Visit Bhutan
Due to its location, Bhutan's weather has its own climatic features affected by its altitudes and terrains. It is also incredibly diverse having four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and winter.

However, it is also the most crowded around this time, with fully booked hotels and services. Planning and pre-booking your accommodations and services months in advance is essential.
For this reason, the Bhutan government offers a 'Minimum Daily Package' rate for tours which vary in price depending on the season. For Indians travelling to Bhutan, the minimum daily package of 3 individuals is $250 per person per night during peak season.
The package includes 3-star accommodation, all meals, a licensed Bhutanese tour guide, all internal transportation, including air travel within the country and camping equipment and supplies for trekkers.

The rainy season and the offseason during winter is the best time to go to Bhutan if you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy low travel fares. The minimum daily package for January, February, June, July, August and December is around $200 instead of the usual $250 during peak seasons.
Remember to dress in layers if you visit during the winter months (December to February) and pack a raincoat and umbrella during Bhutan's rainy season (June to August).
The winter months are especially great for sightseeing as Bhutan's winters are often sunny and cool. Moreover, there are still plenty of festivals to attend during this time, and the weather is also perfect for hiking.
You should note that the weather will depend on where you are staying in Bhutan as the temperature varies with the altitude, so always keep a jacket handy and bring a pair of sunglasses as the sunlight can be glaring during your hikes.
Lastly, Bhutan's rainy season is best for indoor activities, so this may be a good time to plan for cultural trips involving many museum visits or a spa retreat. If you want to avoid the high costs and the cold in one go, visiting Bhutan in early June is recommended.
