Masoor dal is that ingredient from the legume family that we are talking about here. Masoor dal in English is red lentils, and masoor dal’s botanical name is Lens Culinaris. These red lentils are widely used all over the world, but they find a special place in Indian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean cuisine. They have a permanent place there because of their rich, nutty flavour.

As the name suggests, the whole masoor dal is an undivided dal, still unskinned. It is black or brown in colour and, hence, is called black masoor dal. These tiny and shiny legumes are packed with innumerable health-boosting components.

The black masoor dal benefits your blood, heart, sugar and cholesterol levels, skin, and many more organs.

There is a small procedure that the whole masoor dal goes through in order to be split into half and become a whole new ingredient with slightly different properties and benefits.

Recipes

Masoor Dal for Babies (Above 8 Months)

Add 2-3 tbsp of split masoor dal, half a cup of water, and salt (if your baby has started salt intake) to the pressure cooker. Let the dal cook, which usually takes about 3-4 whistles. Wait till the pressure leaves the cooker.

Remove the cooked dal from the cooker, and once cooled, add it to the blender. Add another half a cup of water to the cooked dal and blend it. Strain the blended mixture and give the strained water to your baby.

Masoor Dal Curry

Nothing like a classic curry to pair with piping hot rice.

Step 1: You need whole masoor dal (rinsed), chopped tomatoes and onions, coriander for garnish, tadka ingredients like cumin seeds and mustard seeds, essential spice powders, salt, and oil. Get a pressure cooker or cooking pot.

Step 2: Add the oil to the pot. Once the oil is hot, add the cumin and mustard seeds. Add the onions first and saute until they are golden brown. Add the tomatoes and let them cook until they are mushy. After this, add the spices and salt.

Step 3: Once you have mixed all the spices with the onion and tomato, you can add the rinsed masoor dal to the pot.

Step 4: Cover the pot with a lid and let it cook for a minute or two. Add some water after that and close it for a few minutes again. This time, you can open the pot after 15 minutes, and you will get your whole masoor dal curry ready.

Serve it with hot rice or roti, and enjoy!
