Gujarat Road Tax

Most people who have been to Gujarat or reside there have much to say about the roads of the State. The State has among the best-kept roads in the country, which gives it an edge over its competitors. The network of roads and highways always contributes to making Gujarat among the most developed States in the country. If you are in Gujarat and are thinking of buying a car there, you will have a seamless ride every time you take your car out for a spin.

If you wonder how Gujarat manages to keep its roads in such an impeccable state, the answer is simple. Gujarat relies on its residents to pay road tax utilised for the upkeep of the infrastructure. This tax money is used to make repairs and upgrades as and where required so that residents do not have issues when on the road. Gujarat road tax is collected from all vehicles, whether private or commercial. While most states charge a variable interest rate for different classes of vehicles, Gujarat charges a 6% tax for four-wheeler vehicles. The State's Transportation Department collects the RTO tax in Gujarat on behalf of the Government.

It is mandatory to pay the road tax if you intend to use your car on the roads of Gujarat. If you are caught driving your vehicle without paying the road tax, there are penalties to be paid. In the same way, you also need to have four-wheeler insurance if you are driving your vehicle anywhere in India. The Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 mandates it, and if you are seen on the roads without insurance for your car, the repercussions could be severe.

How are RTO Charges in Gujarat Calculated?

Consequences of not Paying your Road Tax

Earlier, the penalty for not paying your road tax in Gujarat was that you had to pay interest on the tax amount. Then in 2016, the Government removed the interest, even though you would still have to pay the penalty for not paying the road tax amount in time. The Government also offered an opportunity to settle all the unpaid taxes. This opportunity was only offered to the people for three months. Barring this opportunity, the general default rate is 18% of the tax amount. It is best to pay the amount in time to be clear in the eyes of the law and avoid any penalties.
