Individual Health Insurance
Individual Health Insurance
Individual health insurance is designed to cover the medical expenses of a single person. Unlike family health insurance or shared policies, it offers personalised coverage to satisfy your specific healthcare requirements.
The medical needs of an individual are unique and can be based on occupation, lifestyle, hereditary factors, and other health risks. Individual health insurance offers comprehensive coverage to cover various expenses like hospitalisation, day care procedures, AYUSH treatment, and medical procedures for critical illnesses. It can be customised to meet your individual healthcare needs.
Individual health insurance plans can be purchased for yourself, spouse, son, daughter, mother, father, mother-in-law, and father-in-law. The premium is determined based on factors such as age, gender, medical history, sum insured, and type of health insurance.
From extensive coverage options to seamless claim processes, TATA AIG Individual Health Insurance Plans ensure you are prepared for life’s uncertainties.

- Protection Against Medical Emergencies
From diagnosis and treatment to hospitalisation and medications, personal health insurance offers extensive coverage for the various medical costs. It provides coverage for common illnesses as well as severe conditions like cancer, cardiovascular diseases and renal failure.
- Customisable Coverage
Individual medical insurance lets you choose coverage based on your age, medical history and specific health requirements. Tailored benefits ensure you only pay for what you need, making the plan cost-effective and efficient.

What to Consider While Purchasing an Individual Health Insurance Policy?
Coverage Needs
Evaluate your healthcare requirements based on age, pre-existing conditions, anticipated medical expenses and lifestyle habits. This will help you determine the coverage and sum insured required.
Policy Coverage
Examine the coverage offered by the single health insurance policy, such as for hospitalisation, pre- and post-hospitalisation, day care procedures, and critical illnesses. Ensure that they satisfy your specific medical needs.
Sum Insured
Opt for a higher sum insured that accounts for inflation and rising healthcare costs. While looking for an affordable health insurance policy, do not compromise on the required coverage.
Add-On Riders
Enhance your policy with optional riders like critical illness or accidental cover. These customisations make your individual health insurance policy align with your unique needs.
Exclusions and Waiting Periods
Understand the policy exclusions and waiting periods applicable to pre-existing conditions and specific treatments. This will help you understand what features are not covered under the policy and how long you need to wait for specific coverage.
Lifetime Renewability
Healthcare expenses increase as you get older. Choose a policy with lifetime renewability to secure coverage during later years when health risks increase.
Network Hospitals
Explore TATA AIG’s vast network of hospitals across India, offering cashless treatment. Look out for reputable hospitals near your location to access timely benefits.

How Much Coverage Do You Need In Your Individual Health Insurance Plan?
The coverage required depends on several factors, such as age, lifestyle, pre-existing health conditions, healthcare costs in your city, and more. As a thumb rule, you can consider it anywhere between 50% - 100% of your annual income.
Here are a few tips on the factors that can help you determine the right coverage for your individual medical insurance policy.
Healthcare costs in your area
Healthcare expenses are higher in Tier I cities, compared to Tier II and Tier III cities. Examine the treatment costs for common illnesses in some of the reputable hospitals in your locality.
Pre-existing health conditions
If you suffer from pre-existing health conditions, determine the treatment expenses and costs associated with your routine check-ups.
Family medical history
If your family has a history of critical illnesses, examine the costs that you might incur in the future for treating such illnesses in some of the best hospitals in your locality.
Age
Younger individuals can consider basic coverage for essential healthcare needs if they don’t suffer from any specific health condition.
And with the increase in age, account for the possible healthcare expenses that might arise in the future and determine the coverage. This largely depends on your lifestyle.
Lifestyle
Sedentary lifestyle, irregular routines and sleep patterns, unhealthy eating, and higher consumption of alcohol or smoking can increase health risks. And this demands higher coverage.

Individual Health Insurance Tax Benefit
Under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, the premium paid for an individual health insurance policy is eligible for a tax deduction benefit.
The maximum deduction depends on the age.
For individuals below 60 years of age, the maximum deduction limit is ₹25,000, and for those above 60 years, it is ₹50,000.
You can claim this benefit on two separate policies, one purchased for yourself and your family (including spouse and children), and another for your parents.
Scenario 1: If you are less than 60 years of age and your parent is above 60 years of age, the maximum deduction you can claim is ₹75,000.
Scenario 2: If both you and your parents are above 60 years, the maximum possible deduction you can claim is ₹1,00,000.
In addition, you can also claim up to ₹5,000 for preventive health check-ups. However, it is included within the maximum deduction limit based on age.
Difference Between Group and Individual Health Insurance
| Plan Type | Description | Our Product |
|---|---|---|
| Individual Plans | Cover one person under a health policy, ideal for individuals (e.g. young professionals or sole earners). These plans provide comprehensive coverage, including hospitalisation, pre- and post-hospitalisation and day-care treatments, tailored to a single person’s needs. | TATA AIG MediCare advantage plans (available in variants like MediCare Select, MediCare Premier, etc., which can be bought as a personal health plan). |
| Family Floater Plans | Such plans ensure that the entire family is covered under one policy with a shared sum insured. A single floater plan covers multiple family members (such as yourself, your spouse, children, and dependent parents), making it cost-effective and convenient. | TATA AIG MediCare plan can be taken as a family floater policy to cover your loved ones in one plan. |
| Women-specific Health Plans | Plans or add-on covers designed to address women’s specific health insurance needs. These may include benefits like maternity coverage, preventive screenings (e.g. cervical/breast cancer screenings), and wellness programs. This ensures female policyholders have support for women-centric medical needs (like pregnancy or hormone-related conditions). | Instead of a separate standalone plan, TATA AIG offers the EmpowerHer add-on, which can be purchased with a Base Plan, such as MediCare Premier or Select, for an additional premium. |
| Senior Citizen Plans | These are health insurance plans specifically designed for older adults (typically those aged 60 and above). These plans focus on coverage for age-related illnesses, frequent medical care and higher health risks that seniors face. Premiums paid for senior plans can also yield higher tax benefits on health insurance (up to ₹50,000 or ₹75,000 under Section 80D) due to the insured's age. | TATA AIG Elder Care is a dedicated senior citizen health insurance plan that offers specialised coverage for elderly individuals, including features such as mandatory pre-policy health check-ups and coverage for common ailments affecting senior citizens. |
| Critical Illness Plans | These are the plans that provide financial protection against serious illnesses like cancer, heart attack, kidney failure, etc. These policies typically pay a lump sum or cover extensive treatment costs upon diagnosis of listed critical illnesses, helping the patient fund expensive care. Such plans ensure that in the event of a major illness, the insured gets a financial cushion to focus on recovery. | TATA AIG Criti MediCare is a critical illness insurance policy that offers comprehensive protection for a wide range of serious illnesses (covering around 100 conditions) and provides lump-sum payouts or specialised benefits when a critical illness is diagnosed. Additionally, our CanCare rider can be added to a Base Policy as solid protection against the treatment of cancer. |
| Group Medical Plans | Health insurance plans are offered to a defined group of people, usually by an employer for its employees (and sometimes their families). Group health plans cover all members under a master policy with uniform benefits. Such plans typically start coverage from day one without waiting periods for specified ailments or pre-existing conditions, providing immediate health cover to members. | TATA AIG Group MediCare is a group health insurance product for organisations that provides medical coverage to employees (and optionally their spouses, children, and parents) under one policy, with features such as cashless treatment, coverage for employees’ families and no waiting period for enrolment. |
| Super Top-Up / Rider Plans | These are supplemental plans or add-ons that enhance your base health insurance coverage. A Super top-up plan provides additional coverage after your regular policy’s coverage is exhausted or a certain deductible is crossed. It’s a cost-effective way to increase coverage for large bills. Riders are optional add-on benefits you can attach to a base health policy to customise it. TATA AIG offers a variety of add-on covers that can be bought for more comprehensive protection. | Tata AIG MediCare Plus is one of our Super Top-Up plans that extends coverage beyond the base plan’s limit. Additionally, we offer optional riders, such as maternity benefits or hospital cash, that policyholders can purchase along with the main plan to broaden their coverage. |
Health insurance plans for individuals offer greater flexibility and long-term security. Choosing between the two depends on your personal requirements.
