Add-ons in Health Insurance
Health Insurance Add-ons
Health insurance add-ons provide enhanced protection in addition to your base health insurance coverage. You can choose to include them in your health insurance plans based on your specific health care needs.
These add-ons expand the medical coverage, eliminating the need to purchase separate health insurance plans for specific benefits.
TATA AIG offers a broad range of add-on covers in health insurance to help you personalise your health policy based on your individual requirements.
What are Health Insurance Add-ons?
Health insurance add-ons, also known as health insurance riders, are optional covers that offer protection for specific healthcare needs or situations beyond the coverage of your base health plan.
For example, if your health insurance policy does not have maternity coverage, you can opt for it as an add-on. These add-ons in medical insurance come at an additional cost and can be included in your health insurance policy at the time of purchase or during renewal.
TATA AIG offers different types of health insurance riders, such as OPD Care, Cancer Care, EmpowerHer (for women’s specific health concerns), Mental Wellbeing, and more.
By adding riders to your health insurance plan, you can customise and enhance your coverage based on your unique health needs. Also, based on the availability of add-ons under a policy, you can choose and add multiple add-ons.

Who Needs Add-on Covers in Health Insurance Plans?
The need for add-ons in medical insurance depends on individual circumstances. Here are a few scenarios that we can consider:
If you have a pre-existing health condition, you may choose add-ons that help reduce the waiting period for early access to benefits.
If you frequently visit doctors on an OPD basis, you can consider including the OPD Care health insurance rider.
If you are planning a pregnancy, you can include the add-on for maternity care. However, this should be included well in advance, as it usually comes with a waiting period of 2 years.
If you want to cover treatments for PCOD conditions, you can opt for women-specific health insurance riders.
If your family has a history of critical illnesses, such as cancer, you may consider the Cancer Care add-on.
Choosing the Right Health Insurance Add-ons - Factors to Consider
Assess your Healthcare Needs: Assess your individual healthcare needs and identify the specific coverage benefits you may require in your health insurance policy.
Inclusions under the Add-ons: Go through the policy document carefully to understand the expenses and benefits covered under each add-on.
Eligibility Criteria: Certain add-ons may be available only to certain individuals or under specific conditions. Review these conditions, if applicable.
Compare Health Insurance: Review and compare health insurance plans, including the various health insurance add-ons available under each option.
Policy Conditions and Exclusions: Review the applicable add-on policy terms, conditions, and exclusions to know what is covered and not covered under the optional add-on.
Waiting Period: Check whether the selected health insurance add-ons require you to go through a specific waiting period.
Premium and Affordability: While add-ons provide additional coverage, they are available at an additional premium. Calculate the total premium and ensure it fits within your budget.
Common Mistakes to Avoid While Choosing Health Insurance Add-ons
Ignoring Waiting Periods and Exclusions: Some add-ons may have waiting periods and specific exclusions. Understanding these aspects is necessary to avail of the benefits when in need.
Choosing Riders Beyond Actual Requirements: Including health insurance add-ons that are not necessary or you may never use, can unnecessarily increase your premium.
Ignoring Coverage Limits: Although add-ons offer additional coverage under specific conditions, they come with certain coverage limits. Filing claims for expenses beyond these limits may not be paid.
Health Insurance with Add-ons vs. Standalone Comprehensive Health Insurance: Which is Better?
A health insurance policy with add-ons offers essential healthcare coverage with the option to include multiple add-ons. On the other hand, a standalone comprehensive health insurance policy offers a wide range of medical coverage benefits under a single policy.
The better option among the two depends on your specific needs. For instance, if you are a healthy individual with a healthy lifestyle and no major family history of illnesses, a basic health insurance policy may be sufficient for you. In such a case, you can include the required health insurance add-ons in later years when you feel it is necessary.
On the other hand, if you are planning for a baby, have lifestyle-related health issues such as obesity, or a family medical history of critical illnesses, your healthcare needs may be more diverse. In such cases, opting for a comprehensive health insurance plan with suitable add-ons is more suitable, as it provides broader and more extensive coverage such as maternity care, global cover, etc.
Conclusion
Health insurance add-ons offer enhanced protection for specific health conditions beyond what is covered under a standard health insurance policy. They are optional and allow you to customise your health insurance plan based on your individual needs.
You can review the different types of health insurance riders and choose the necessary add-ons either at the time of purchase or during policy renewal.
TATA AIG offers a diverse range of add-on covers in health insurance that vary across individual plans and the health insurance for family options. Explore our policy options and add-ons to ensure more comprehensive health insurance coverage for your future needs.
