Flood Insurance

Flood insurance is an insurance cover included in a home insurance policy that covers loss or damage to your home's building structure and its contents caused by flooding.

It helps you manage the cost of repairing or reconstructing your home building, or repairing or replacing its contents damaged by floods. Flooding can occur due to various reasons, such as heavy rainfall, overflowing rivers, tidal waves, tsunamis and other natural calamities.

Currently, flood insurance is generally not available as a standalone policy in India. Instead, flood insurance cover is available as part of home insurance.

TATA AIG offers flood insurance coverage with three popular home insurance plans: Bharat Griha Raksha, Home Protect, and Smart Home All-Risk. These plans are designed with customisable options to suit your needs and budget.

Is Flood Insurance Necessary?

The risk of floods is high in many parts of India, with 12.5% of the country’s geographical area being identified as high-risk areas.

Homeowners and tenants living in low-lying or flood-prone areas need flood insurance cover the most. Even if you do not live in a known flood-prone area, unexpected heavy rainfall or overflowing water bodies can cause flooding and damage to homes.

The Smart Home All-Risk Plan offers broad coverage for flood-related damage to your home, belongings, and valuables. It includes Building All Risk, Contents All Risk, Portable Electronics All Risk, Jewellery All Risk, and Fine Arts and Valuables All Risk Cover.

Under Home Building Cover

You can choose the sum insured for your building in two ways. The first is the Reconstruction Value basis , where the sum insured is based on the current cost of reconstructing your building.

The second is the Agreed Value basis , where the sum insured is based on the value agreed between you and TATA AIG. It is available only for flats and apartments.

If your building is damaged due to a flood, the amount paid depends on the sum insured option you have chosen.

For Total Loss:

Under the Reconstruction Value basis , we cover the cost of reconstructing or reinstating the building.

In case of a flat or apartment, if you choose not to reconstruct or reinstate your flat or apartment, the claim will be settled based on the cost of reconstructing a similar flat or apartment as new on the date of the loss.

Under the Agreed Value basis (available only to flats and apartments), we cover the cost of reconstructing or reinstating the insured flat or apartment. If you choose to keep the damaged flat or apartment without constructing or reinstating it, the claim will be settled based on the cost of constructing it as it was new as of the date of loss.

If you choose not to reconstruct or reinstate and instead hand it over to TATA AIG, we settle the sum insured stated in the policy.

For Partial Loss:

If your building is partially damaged due to a flood, we cover the actual cost of repairing it, without deducting for depreciation. It is applicable to both the sum insured options: Reconstruction Value basis and Agreed Value basis.

Under Contents All Risk Cover

The sum insured for your contents is based on the current cost of replacing them with a new identical or similar item.

If the item is damaged due to a flood, we cover the cost of repairing it. If the item is completely lost in a flood, we cover the cost of replacing it. The amount payable in both cases is subject to the sum insured.
