India's transition towards electric mobility is gathering pace. With electric vehicle (EV) registrations rising by approximately 52% in the first nine months of 2026, more Indians are choosing electric vehicles for their everyday transportation needs.

However, as EV adoption increases, there is another important aspect that vehicle owners need to consider: whether their motor insurance provides suitable protection for the unique risks associated with electric vehicles.

From expensive battery components to specialised repairs and charging-related risks, owning an EV introduces insurance considerations that may differ from those of conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.

India's EV Market Records Strong Growth in 2026

According to Vahan registration data, India registered approximately 25.4 lakh electric vehicles between January and September 2026, compared to 16.7 lakh during the corresponding period in 2025. This represents year-on-year growth of around 52%.

The numbers highlight the growing acceptance of electric mobility in India:

  • 10.7% of new vehicle registrations during January–September 2026 were electric, compared to 8.6% a year earlier.

  • EV registrations in the first nine months of 2026 surpassed the total recorded during the entire calendar year 2025.

  • September 2026 witnessed approximately 3.37 lakh EV registrations, representing growth of around 76% over September 2025.

These figures cover electric vehicles across categories, including two-wheelers, passenger cars, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles.

As more consumers transition to electric cars, understanding electric car insurance is becoming an increasingly important part of vehicle ownership.

Why Do Electric Cars Have Different Insurance Requirements?

Although electric cars and conventional cars share several risks, such as accidents, theft and natural disasters, EVs also have distinct components and operating requirements.

High-value batteries

The battery is among the most valuable components of an electric car. Damage to the battery during an accident or due to certain electrical incidents can involve substantial repair or replacement expenses.

However, not every type of battery damage is automatically covered by motor insurance. Coverage depends on the cause of damage, the policy terms and the add-ons selected.

Electrical and charging-related risks

Electric cars rely on sophisticated electrical systems and charging equipment. Short circuits, electrical leakage, water ingress and other electrical incidents may create additional risks.

Vehicle owners should check whether their policies cover these incidents and whether specific protections are required for charging equipment.

Specialised repairs

Electric vehicles often require technicians trained to handle high-voltage components and advanced battery systems. Repairs may also involve specialised diagnostic equipment.

This makes it important for EV owners to understand their insurer's repair network, claims process and provisions for vehicle repairs.

Commenting on the changing requirements, A Kiran Kumar, Head – Motor Underwriting, Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited, said:

"India’s EV story has moved from early adoption to the mainstream, and that changes how vehicle owners need to think about protection. An electric vehicle carries a different risk profile from a conventional one. The battery is its most valuable component, repairs often call for specialised expertise, and charging brings a new set of exposures at home and on the road."

What Should Electric Car Owners Look for in Motor Insurance?

Choosing suitable insurance for an electric car involves more than comparing premiums. It is equally important to understand the extent of protection offered.

Comprehensive Car Insurance

While third-party insurance covers specified legal liabilities towards third parties, it does not cover damage to the insured owner's own car.

A comprehensive car insurance policy combines third-party liability protection with own-damage coverage for specified events, such as accidents, theft, fire and certain natural disasters.

However, comprehensive insurance does not necessarily cover every electrical failure, battery-related incident or charging equipment loss.

EV-Specific Insurance Add-ons

Depending on the policy and available options, electric car owners may consider additional protection such as:

  • Electric Surge Secure: Provides protection against specified electrical risks, including arcing, self-heating, electrical leakage and short circuits, subject to policy conditions.

  • Battery Convenience Cover: Helps cover specified expenses associated with the inspection, packaging and transportation of an irreparably damaged EV battery for disposal, subject to an admissible claim and other conditions.

  • Wall Charger Protect: Provides coverage for loss or damage to eligible wall-mounted charging equipment and accessories due to specified insured events, subject to the applicable sum insured and exclusions.

  • Depreciation Allowance – Battery: Helps reimburse eligible depreciation deductions on battery replacement under an admissible own-damage claim, subject to the selected cover.

These add-ons address different requirements and should not be treated as interchangeable. Their availability, scope, limits and exclusions depend on the policy selected.

Five Things to Check Before Buying or Renewing EV Insurance

As electric mobility becomes more common, EV owners can make better-informed insurance decisions by checking a few essential aspects.

  • Battery coverage: Understand whether accidental battery damage is covered and how the battery's value is accounted for in the policy's Insured Declared Value (IDV).

  • Charging equipment: Check whether portable chargers, wall-mounted chargers and related accessories are covered, and under what circumstances.

  • EV-specific add-ons: Review available protections against electrical incidents, battery-related expenses and other relevant risks.

  • Repair and claims support: Find out whether the insurer's garage network includes facilities equipped to handle your electric car model.

  • Exclusions and deductibles: Read the policy conditions carefully, particularly those relating to manufacturing defects, wear and tear, electrical breakdowns, claim limits and the amount payable by the policyholder.

Reviewing these details at the time of purchase or renewal can help EV owners choose protection that better reflects their vehicle's requirements.

Growing Commercial EV Adoption Also Creates Insurance Considerations

Electric mobility is expanding beyond private passenger vehicles. Electric three-wheelers, delivery vehicles and commercial EV fleets are becoming part of India's changing transportation landscape.

For businesses operating electric vehicles, insurance considerations can also include fleet-level exposure, specialised repairs and potential operational disruption following vehicle damage.

Commercial EV owners should assess suitable commercial motor insurance arrangements, including the applicable policy coverage, exclusions and available protections.

The Road Ahead: Smarter EV Ownership Requires Informed Insurance Choices

India's rapid EV adoption reflects a significant shift in the country's mobility landscape. As electric vehicles become more common, insurance awareness needs to evolve alongside vehicle technology.

For individual car owners, this means looking beyond the cost of the insurance premium and understanding how the policy addresses battery damage, electrical incidents, charging equipment and repair requirements. With appropriate coverage and greater awareness of policy conditions, EV owners can make more informed decisions about protecting their vehicles.
