Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited (Tata AIG), one of India's leading general insurers, today called on India's fast-growing base of electric vehicle owners to review their motor insurance, as new registration data shows the EV market growing at its fastest pace in recent years.

According to Vahan registration data, India registered 25.37 lakh EVs between January and September 2026, up 51.9% from 16.70 lakh in the same period last year. In just nine months, 2026 has already surpassed the 23,56,971 EVs registered in all of 2025. Growth has also sped up sharply, from 28.0% in 2024 and 16.3% in 2025.

EVs accounted for 10.7% of all new vehicle registrations in the period, up from 8.6% a year ago. Every month of 2026 grew over the same month of 2025, and September was the strongest month of the year so far at 3,37,240 EVs, up 76.1% year on year. At the current pace, 2026 could close at around 33.8 lakh EV registrations, with the festive quarter yet to be counted.

As EV adoption grows, the associated insurance requirements are also evolving. Electric vehicles have distinct risk considerations, including battery damage, specialised repair requirements and charging-related incidents. For vehicle owners, understanding how these risks are addressed under their motor insurance policies is becoming increasingly important.

Commenting on the trend, A Kiran Kumar, Head – Motor Underwriting, Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited, said, “India’s EV story has moved from early adoption to the mainstream, and that changes how vehicle owners need to think about protection. An electric vehicle carries a different risk profile from a conventional one. The battery is its most valuable component, repairs often call for specialised expertise, and charging brings a new set of exposures at home and on the road.”

Tata AIG General Insurance highlights the importance of informed motor insurance choices as consumers transition towards electric mobility. EV owners should assess the scope of their policy, including applicable coverage for battery-related damage, charging equipment where covered, accidental damage and relevant add-on protections like electric Surge Secure cover, battery convenience cover, wall charger protection cover among others. They should also understand policy exclusions, deductibles and claim conditions to ensure that their coverage aligns with their requirements.

The growing adoption of electric three-wheelers and other commercial EVs also brings fleet protection into focus. For businesses, insurance considerations extend beyond vehicle damage to operational continuity, repair-related downtime and the management of fleet-level risks, subject to the terms of the applicable policy.

As India’s EV market continues to expand, greater awareness of vehicle-specific insurance requirements can help consumers and businesses make more informed protection decisions. The opportunity for the insurance industry lies in combining appropriate coverage with risk awareness to support the next phase of India’s mobility transition.

AI Cyber Risks: Why Indian Businesses Should Review Their Cyber Insurance

Imagine a cyberattack shutting down a manufacturing plant, leaving production at a standstill. Or a logistics company's systems being compromised, preventing hundreds of trucks from completing deliveries. Or an employee unknowingly exposing confidential client information by uploading it to a publicly accessible Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool. These situations highlight how cyber risks have evolved beyond data theft and financial fraud. Today, a cyber incident can disrupt business operations, compromise sensitive information, damage customer relationships and expose organisations to legal liabilities. With businesses increasingly adopting AI, the nature of these threats is changing further. This makes it important for Indian organisations to reassess not only their cybersecurity measures but also whether their cyber insurance coverage is adequate for their evolving risk exposure.
