Two Wheeler Insurance
What is Bike Insurance?
Bike insurance is a type of insurance policy that offers financial protection against damage to your two-wheeler. This covers the cost of repairs of your damaged bike and offers compensation in case the damage is beyond repair or theft. The damages or loss could be due to various reasons, such as accidents, natural disasters and theft.
In addition, it covers repair expenses arising from an accident caused to someone else’s bike, property or body by your insured bike. This includes legal expenses, the cost of repairing damaged property, and financial compensation in case of third-party injuries or death.
Why Is Bike Insurance Necessary?
For Legal Compliance
Riding your bike without a valid third-party two-wheeler insurance policy is illegal and can lead to serious consequences as per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. Further, as per the Supreme Court order of 2018, all new two-wheelers must have a 5-year third-party insurance policy. If you opt for a comprehensive bike insurance policy, the policy duration can be three years.
Financial Coverage Against Theft
If your bike is stolen or is damaged beyond repair, it is considered a total loss. Recovering from a total loss of a vehicle can be overwhelming and create a huge financial burden. But with a two-wheeler insurance policy, the cost of replacing your vehicle is covered.
Coverage Against Natural and Man-Made Disasters
Natural disasters, such as floods, lightning, cyclones, and storms and man-made acts of violence, such as terrorism and vandalism, can cause severe damage to your bike. A bike insurance policy offers comprehensive protection against these risks.
For Personal Accident Cover
If you meet with an unfortunate road accident that causes injuries or even death, it affects you and your family. Thus, as per IRDAI, it is mandatory to have a personal accident (PA) cover. If you do not have PA cover in place, you can get the PA cover of up to ₹15 lakhs with us to cover medical expenses.
Who Should Buy Two-Wheeler Insurance?
Two-wheeler insurance is essential for anyone who owns a bike, whether it is for personal or commercial use. However, it is particularly important for the following categories of riders to buy bike insurance.
New Bike Owners
According to Indian regulations, it is mandatory to get at least a third-party bike insurance policy when you purchase a new bike.
Daily Commuters
Students, professionals, and others who ride their bikes every day for routine activities are exposed to accidental risks, making bike insurance essential.
Long Distance Riders
Bike enthusiasts who frequently travel or go on long road trips are exposed to higher risks of accidents, engine breakdowns, tyre damage, etc., making bike insurance more than essential.
Beginner Riders
New riders are more prone to accidents while learning, which can result in colliding with other vehicles, denting your own vehicle while riding or parking, etc. Having bike insurance offers a safety net to new riders.
Professional Delivery Riders
Delivery riders often ride under pressure in every weather to deliver orders on time. This may lead to slips, accidental damage to other vehicles, tyre damage due to potholes, etc. Bike insurance coverage is crucial in such cases.
Types of Two-wheeler Insurance Plans Offered by TATA AIG
Comprehensive Bike Insurance Policy
Offers protection against third-party liabilities, as well as damage or loss to your own two-wheeler caused by accidents, theft, and natural or man-made disasters. It also includes a personal accident cover for the owner-driver.
It is ideal for riders seeking complete protection under one policy. Comprehensive bike insurance offers extensive coverage and a wide range of optional add-ons to further enhance and customise your coverage.
Standalone Own Damage Bike Insurance Policy
Offers exclusive coverage for your bike to cover damages caused by various risks, including fire, theft, man-made disasters (such as riots and strikes) and natural calamities (like earthquakes and floods). However, it does not cover third-party liabilities.
It is ideal for anyone who already has an active third-party insurance policy and wants complete protection for their bikes. So, if you have our 5-year third-party insurance with a 1-year own damage policy, you can secure coverage for the remaining four years by purchasing this plan separately each year.
Standalone Third-Party Bike Insurance Policy
Offers protection against third-party liabilities, including damage to other persons’ property, vehicles or bodily injuries. It is mandatory for all bike owners to have this coverage. However, do note that it does not cover damages to your own vehicle.
TATA AIG offers standalone third-party bike insurance policies for both 5 years and 3 years. You can also opt for a bundled two-wheeler insurance package that provides 5-year third-party cover and 1-year own damage cover.
Students, salaried employees, and everyone else who uses bikes, whether a Honda Shine
, a sports bike like the Kawasaki Ninja or a modern EV bike like the Revolt RV400, can insure their bike with us.
Most often used by elderly people and women, EV bikes like the Ola S1 Pro also require mandatory protection. Even when you don’t use your EV every day, it is essential that you insure your bike.
Lightweight two-wheelers, like the TVS Jupiter or the Scooty Pep, are often used for daily commutes. If you own a moped, you can secure mandatory as well as comprehensive protection with our plans.

Third-Party vs Comprehensive vs Standalone Own Damage Bike Insurance
Motor insurance companies in India offer two-wheeler insurance online in two popular variants - comprehensive bike insurance and third-party bike insurance. Let us look at the difference between comprehensive and third-party bike insurance:
What does it mean?
An all-round two-wheeler insurance cover that protects you, your vehicle and a third-party person/property from the financial damages caused.
It covers damages caused to the insured bike due to accidents, theft, natural or man-made disasters, etc.
Basic two-wheeler insurance coverage that covers the legal and financial liabilities arising from third-party damages.
Extent of coverage
Covers the damages caused to your bike, theft, third-party liabilities and an optional personal accident cover for the owner-driver.
It only covers repair expenses for your bike. It does not cover damages caused to other’s vehicles, property or bodily injury.
Covers the third-party liabilities arising from damages to a third party, their property or death caused by your vehicle.
Is it a legal mandate?
It is not mandatory according to the Motor Vehicles Act.
It is not mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act.
It is mandatory for every vehicle owner in India.
How much does it cost?
Due to the wide coverage, this plan is more expensive than third-party two-wheeler insurance plans.
This costs more than the third-party insurance plan but less than the comprehensive plan.
This costs less as the premium prices depend only on the engine capacity and are the same across all insurers.
What is excluded from the coverage?
Does not cover deliberate damage, damage caused by driving under the influence of drugs/intoxicants, damage caused by illegal racing, etc.
Does not cover damages caused to other vehicles, persons or property.
Does not cover own damage to the vehicle or injuries to the owner-driver.
Can you include add-ons?
Yes, you can extend the coverage with our wide range of add-ons.
Yes, you can include add-ons with this plan.
Add-ons are not available with this plan.
Bike Insurance for Electric Vehicles
Electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular as people switch to cleaner, cost-efficient commuting. But with advanced high-voltage batteries and electronic parts, repairs can often be much more expensive than those for regular bikes. That’s where a specialised EV bike insurance policy comes in. It covers you against accidents, theft, fire, natural disasters like floods and man-made risks such as vandalism, while also offering protection against third-party liabilities.
Imagine riding during heavy rains, and waterlogging damages your bike’s battery - repairs could cost thousands. With EV insurance, those costs are taken care of. This makes EV insurance not just an option, but a necessity to safeguard your bike and your wallet.

Two-Wheeler Insurance Add-on Covers
Enhance your Tata AIG comprehensive two wheeler insurance by choosing from a list of 8 unique bike insurance add-on covers:
Depreciation Allowance
This add-on, popularly known as Zero Depreciation or NIL Depreciation or Bumper-to-Bumper Cover, helps you get the entire claim amount without the deduction of depreciation. Without this add-on, the depreciation amount of replacement/repair of your bike’s parts is deducted from the claim amount. However, note that you can avail of this benefit only under the first two claims.
Return-to-Invoice Cover
This add-on helps you get the invoice cost of your vehicle as reimbursement in case of theft, total damage or constructive total damage. Without the add-on, you get the current market value, i.e., the Insured Declared Valuee (IDV) of the bike. But with this add-on, we will pay you the purchase cost of the bike, which is the on-road price of the bike (inclusive of road taxes and registration).
Emergency Medical Expenses
Get reimbursement of emergency medical expenses and ambulance costs for the damages caused in an accident. If an accident leaves you or the pillion rider injured, this add-on will help you avail of reimbursement for the medical expenses incurred in the medical treatment at any hospital or nursing home. It also includes the cost of moving you/pillion rider to the hospital.
Additional Personal Accident Cover for the Owner-Driver
This add-on is an additional Personal Accident Cover to safeguard you and your family in case of serious injuries or fatality caused by an accident. We recognise the additional risk of accidents involved when riding a bike. With this add-on, we will pay a predetermined amount to your family in case an accident proves to be fatal. The amount provided under this add-on will be over and above the standard vehicle insurance sum assured.
Additional Third-Party Property Damage Cover
Get more coverage for 3rd party damage than what you normally get with the standard third-party cover with this add-on. Third-party liabilities are already included in both comprehensive and third-party two-wheeler insurance cover. However, you can buy this add-on if you wish to avail of an additional cover for the 3rd party liabilities.
Consumables Expenses
If an accident damages or leads to the loss of certain bike consumables, we will reimburse the costs of replacing, replenishing or repairing them with this add-on. The covered consumables include engine oil, gear box oil, lubricants, nut & bolt, screw, distilled water grease, oil filter, bearings, washers, clip, break oil, air conditioner gas and such other consumables, excluding fuel.
Roadside Assistance
There is nothing worse than an amazing bike ride marred by the breakdown of the vehicle in the middle of the road. Don’t worry; roadside assistance is on the way! With this add-on, we will send immediate breakdown assistance to your location to take care of a variety of issues such as flat tyre, dead battery, fuel requirement, mechanical/electrical repairs, etc. We also offer on-the-spot repairs under certain circumstances so that you are up and zooming through your journey in no time!
Electric Surge Secure
This add-on covers your electric vehicle and approved charging equipment if they get damaged or destroyed due to short circuits, electricity leakage, arcing, overheating or water entering the system while charging. It is available for vehicles up to 5 years old, and the maximum amount is up to the IDV mentioned in your policy.
Depreciation Allowance- Battery
This add-on helps you get the claim amount without the deductions due to depreciation that is usually cut when your EV battery is replaced after an accident or damage. This reduces your out-of-pocket expenses with a nominal deductible that you choose during the policy purchase.
Engine Secure
This add-on covers repair costs if your engine, gearbox or transmission gets damaged due to water entering the engine or leakage of lubricant. It also pays for the lubricating oils/consumables used during repairs, such as engine oil, gear box oil etc., except for fuel. This protects you from expensive repair bills and helps keep your vehicle running smoothly.
Tyre and Rim Secure
This add-on covers the cost of repairing or replacing your tyres and rims if they get damaged due to accidents, potholes, road debris or blowouts. It also includes labour and consumable charges. This helps reduce out-of-pocket expenses and keeps your two-wheeler safe and ready to be driven.
Additional Personal Accident Cover to Unnamed Persons
In case of an unfortunate accident resulting in injury or death, this add-on will offer coverage for anyone driving or travelling in your insured vehicle. This add-on provides an additional benefit that goes beyond the standard ₹1 Lakh limit, extending up to ₹5 Lakh.

How to Buy or Renew an Old Bike Insurance Policy?
Owning an old bike doesn’t mean compromising on protection. Old bike’s insurance policy ensures financial security against accidents, theft and third-party liabilities; while also helping you follow the legal requirements on the road.
Depreciation
As your bike ages, its Insured Declared Value (IDV) reduces due to depreciation. This directly impacts the premium as well as the maximum claim amount in case of total loss.
Usage
If your old bike is used frequently for daily commutes, comprehensive coverage is advisable. For rarely used bikes, third-party insurance may be a cost-effective choice.
Comparison of Policies
Always compare multiple plans on our website. Check premiums, policy tenure and add-on options to ensure your old bike gets the right level of protection at the best price.

Why Choose Two Wheeler Insurance?
These days, two-wheeler insurance policies are packed with features to provide complete protection not just to your bike but also to you, the pillion rider and third-party individuals and vehicles. Here are the top features of two wheeler insurance online:
You can choose between a third-party (liability-only) or a comprehensive bike insurance policy. While the former covers only third-party damages, the latter offers more extensive coverage. As per the Motor Vehicle Act in India, every bike owner must have at least a third-party or liability cover. In contrast, a comprehensive two wheeler insurance policy also covers damages to the policyholder’s vehicle, along with a personal accident cover for the owner-driver and a basic third-party cover.
If you have a bike insurance policy, you can be covered under the inbuilt and mandatory personal accident cover of ₹15 lakhs, according to the IRDAI.
Optional coverage or an add-on cover cost an extra premium but help provide additional cover to your bike over your comprehensive two wheeler insurance policy. You can choose from our various unique add-ons like Return to Invoice, Depreciation Reimbursement, Key Replacement, Engine Secure and more.
If you purchase a new two-wheeler,, the NCB or No Claim Bonus discount from your policy can be transferred since this discount is given to the policyholder for being a safe rider and not to the vehicle.
Insurance providers enable policy buyers to purchase or renew their two-wheeler insurance policy online through their website or through mobile applications. Not only does this make the purchasing and renewal process smoother, but it also helps the customer access all the information as well as policy documents, through a single channel.
By purchasing or renewing an online two-wheeler insurance policy, one can avail of different discounts on their insurance premiums. Apart from the No Claim Bonus that offers annual discounts on the insurance premium for every claim-free year, there are other discounts offered online during the purchase or renewal of your two wheeler policy. This is because an online bike insurance policy purchase helps the insurers avoid overhead costs and also save on the use of paper.
