What is Road Tax?
Road tax, or Vahan tax, is a tax collected by the central and state governments from vehicle owners for using public roads. The tax is used for the maintenance and development of Indian streets.
As per Section 39 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the government has made it compulsory for every vehicle owner to pay a one-time road tax payment if he/she uses the vehicle for more than one year.
Road taxes are an essential source of revenue for the government. The revenue is used to maintain the roads and provide basic amenities such as street lights and road signs. It is also used to expand road networks and upgrade national highways and expressways, repairing potholes, installing traffic lights, and so on.
The amount of road tax is calculated based on various factors, such as a vehicle’s seating capacity, engine capacity, type, and age. For instance, a large commercial vehicle, such as a truck, may pay more road tax than a small privately owned vehicle.
