How to Get Duplicate RC Online for Your Bike?

Written by : TATA AIG Team

In India, the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 makes it mandatory for every vehicle, including two-wheelers, to be registered with the government to drive on any public road. The law requires everyone to carry a valid Registration Certificate (RC) and penalises both the rider and owner for not carrying the document, with on-the-spot fines and even vehicle seizures.

If you have a lost bike RC or it is suspended, cancelled or expired, getting a duplicate registration is of utmost importance. In this blog, we will discuss what to do if you have lost your RC and how to get a duplicate RC.

Bike RC (Registration Certificate) Explained

A bike RC (registration certificate) is a vital document that shows whether a two-wheeler (motorcycle or scooter) is registered to an owner. Essentially, it’s a legal proof of ownership of a bike and a confirmation that the vehicle is compliant with traffic regulations. To get this certificate, one must register their motorbike with the local RTO (Regional Transport Office).

As mentioned before, all vehicle drivers must have a valid RC and show it during routine traffic stops, either as a physical copy or digitally via the Digilocker or eParivahan app. You also need the RC to purchase a new bike insurance policy or to transfer ownership of your bike. Other uses include getting a loan, renewing bike insurance, and applying for a FASTtag.

A bike registration certificate contains essential details like the bike registration number, chassis number, owner’s details, RTO code and the state where it’s registered.

What to Do for Lost Bike RC? List of Guidelines

If you have just found out that you have lost your bike RC, stay calm and follow the given guidelines to get a duplicate registration:

  • Try to Find Your Lost Bike RC Book: While getting a duplicate RC is relatively simple, it will take around 15-30 days to receive the new document. If your loss is recent, you may want to check if you have accidentally misplaced the RC in your vehicle, a file or a drawer.

  • File a Police Report: If you cannot find your bike RC or it’s destroyed, go to your local police station and file a report regarding your loss. Ensure to get a copy of your police report for proof of loss or theft.

  • Create an Affidavit: Along with the police report, you may need an affidavit stating when and where you have lost your bike RC and that your bike is not impounded.

  • Prepare the Documents: You need to file an application for a duplicate bike RC along with the police report, affidavit and other documents, like PUC certificate, ID proof, etc. If you have a loaned vehicle, you will also need to inform your lender and get an NOC (no objection certificate).

  • Apply for a Duplicate RC: You need to send this application in Form 26 to the RTO where you received the previous RC. You need to pay the application fee for the duplicate reprint.

When Do You Need a Duplicate Bike RC?

A duplicate RC is a valid copy of your original bike registration certificate issued to you if you have lost, misplaced or damaged your original RC. It has the same functions as the first document. In short, it confirms the ownership and registration of your bike while ensuring that you can ride your bike without penalties or legal complications.

You should apply for a duplicate RC in the following situations:

  • Lost or Stolen RC: If your bike registration certificate is lost or stolen, you need to immediately file a policy report or FIR (First Information Report). If your bike was stolen along with its RC and insurance certificate, you need a copy of the latter to apply for a bike RC duplicate. You will need a copy of the FIR to get both documents.

  • Damaged or Mutilated: If you have a torn, damaged or mutilated RC document, you may need to get it replaced to use it. Here, you don’t have to provide a police report, FIR or NOC, but you have to submit the original document.

  • Change in Personal Details: If there are substantial changes to your personal details, like your name or address, it needs to be updated in your registration certificate. While it’s not an immediate requirement, an up-to-date document helps you get claim settlements and apply for vehicle loans without hassles. Remember to update the changes with your insurer after getting the corrected RC.

  • Destruction due to a Calamity: If you lose your bike registration documents to a natural disaster like flood, fire, hurricane or a serious accident, you need to file an FIR or GD (general diary) with the local police. In case of a total loss, you need to scrap the bike’s RC by reporting to the relevant Regional Transport Office.
