To drive your car, you need a car driving license. Similarly, to travel to different nations, you need a passport. A passport is a kind of flying/travelling license for us that allows us to visit different countries. Also, along with a valid passport, a travel policy is vital to travel to other countries from India. If you do not have a passport yet, you will need a few documents to get one.

Documents Required For Passport In India

While applying for a passport in India, the applicant has to submit a few necessary documents. Here is a list of documents that you will require to submit in order to avail a fresh passport, a minor’s passport, renew a passport or reissue a passport in the country.

Documents for Applying for a Fresh Passport In India

Address Proof Photocopy of the Passbook of an active bank account in any public sector bank, private sector bank or regional rural banks
Water bill/ Electricity bill
Election Photo ID card
Landline or Postpaid mobile bill
Proof of Gas Connection
Spouse’s passport photocopy (First and last page of the passport that includes the details of the family and mentions the applicant's name as the spouse of the passport holder)
Certificate from Employer of reputed companies on a letterhead
Age Proof School leaving certificates
Birth certificate issued by the Municipal Corporation or the Registrar of Births and Deaths or any other prescribed authority that has been empowered under the Registration of Birth and Deaths Act, 1969 in Indi
Declaration given by the Head of the Child Care Home/Orphanage on the official letterhead that confirms the date of birth of the applicant
Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Organisations which has the date of birth of the applicant
Proof of the service record of the applicant (in case of government servants) or Pay Pension Order (retired government servants) duly attested/certified by the officer/in-charge of the Administration of the concerned Ministry/Department of the applicant
Driving Licence and PAN Card
Election Photo Identity Card
Aadhaar card

Documents for Applying for a Minor’s Passport

Address Proof Birth certificate
School leaving certificate
Declaration given by the Head of the Orphanage/Child Care Home
Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies
Aadhaar card
Age Proof Proof of current address in the parents' name
Photo Passbook of running bank account of the parent
Water bill or electricity bill
Landline or Postpaid mobile bill

Rent agreement of the parent

Mandatory Documents for Renewing a Passport

This is a list of all the mandatory documents that you will have to present while renewing your passport for all the below-mentioned reasons Original copy of the old passport

Few Reasons due to which You Might Need to Renew Your Passport.

Loss/stolen passport/damage beyond recognition For this, you will need -
  • Birth Proof
  • Address Proof
  • Original police report
  • Affidavit stating how and where the passport got lost/stolen/damaged
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC)/Prior Intimation Letter (PI)
Damaged passport with the passport number and name readable, with photograph intact: For this, along with the mandatory documents, you will also need -
  • Affidavit stating how and where the passport got lost/stolen/damaged
  • Birth proof
Change in Appearance: For this, along with the mandatory documents, you will also need your recent photographs showing your appearance change.
Change of Name For this, along with the mandatory documents, you will also need -
  • Fresh ID certificate in your changed name
  • Gazetted notification regarding the name change
Date of Birth Change For this, along with the mandatory documents, you will also need your birth proof.
Address Change For this, along with the mandatory documents, you will also need proof of your current address.
ECR Deletion For this, along with the mandatory documents, you will also need documentary proof for any one of the non-ECR categories.
Change of Birth Place (involving country or state) For this, along with the mandatory documents, you will also need
  • Birth Proof
  • Affidavit showcasing the reason for the change in birthplace, if the place is changed
  • Order from the first-class judicial magistrate or the Sub-divisional magistrate (civil court) if the change in date of birth is more than 2 years or in case of conflicting documents, or if the change in place of birth involves a change in state or country
  • Certificate of citizenship issued by MHA if the place of birth involves a change in-country
Change of Birth Place (not involving country or state) For this, along with the mandatory documents, you will also need
  • Birth Proof
  • Affidavit showcasing the reason for the change in birthplace, if the place is changed
Sex change For this, along with the mandatory documents, you will also need
  • Avowed affidavit regarding change of sex
  • Certificate from the hospital where the applicant had undergone the sex change operation successfully
Change in Parents’ Name For this, along with the mandatory documents, you will also need
  • Passport of the parents with their new names on it
  • Service record or pension order or property-related documents that prove the change in their names
  • Proof highlighting that the parents changed their names when they were alive, in case they are dead

This is a list of all the mandatory documents that you will have to present while reissuing your passport for all the below-mentioned reasons
Original copy of the old passport

Passport of parents with the new name in original along with the self-attested photocopy of the first and last two pages, ECR/Non-ECR page, page of observation and page of validity extension (if any)
