RTO in Ahmedabad

Guided by the provisions of Section 213 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, RTOs in Ahmedabad were established to oversee all transport-related operations in Gujarat's largest city. RTOs also maintain a database of drivers and vehicles in Ahmedabad.

Mainly, there are three RTOs in Ahmedabad:

The RTO in Ahmedabad plays a crucial role in managing vehicle-related services and enforcing the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, to ensure safe and lawful transport in the city. Here are the key functions of the Ahmedabad RTO:

• The RTO enforces all road and vehicle laws under the Motor Vehicles Act. This helps to comply with state regulations.
• From road tax to registration fees, the RTO collects all official charges and allows vehicles to operate legally on the road.
• If it is a commercial transport permit or one for private use, the RTO issues and renews permits

• Issuance of Driving Licences: The RTO Ahmedabad issues all types of driving licences, including the issuance of a duplicate DL, issuance or renewal of learner’s licences and permanent driving licences, addition of vehicle class to the DL, correction in the DL, etc.
• Driving Permits: It provides permits for Indian drivers to operate vehicles abroad. The office also issues permits for auto-rickshaws, taxis, tourist vehicles, goods carriers, and other types of vehicles.
• Conductor Licences: The office issues conductor licences to individuals seeking employment as bus conductors in public or private transport.
• Vehicle Registration and RC Issuance: The Ahmedabad RTO registers new and used vehicles, issuing the Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) to confirm legal ownership. The RTO also provides temporary registration services.
• RC Renewal and Re-registration: If your RC expires or you are relocating to another state, the RTO assists with renewing or updating your vehicle details.
• Fitness Certificates: Vehicles must undergo inspections to ensure they meet safety and emission standards. After vehicle inspections, the RTO issues fitness certificates to certify the roadworthiness of vehicles.
• Transfer of Vehicle Ownership: When buying or selling a vehicle, the RTO assists in the legal transfer of ownership documents between two parties.
• Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificates: The Ahmedabad RTO conducts emission tests and issues PUC certificates. This certification is essential to ensure vehicles meet environmental standards.
• No Objection Certificates (NOC): Necessary for vehicle re-registration in other states. The RTO issues NOCs to support re-registration elsewhere.
• Road Safety Enforcement: The RTO monitors compliance with traffic rules, conducts awareness drives, enforces safety regulations, and takes action against violations.
• Tax Collection & Fees: The office collects road taxes and other fees for the state as mandated by law.

Applying for a New Driving Licence

If you have learnt to drive and want to apply for a new licence, the RTO helps you apply for a learner’s licence and then a permanent licence. After you apply for a learner’s licence, you have to clear the test, practise driving, and then appear for your driving test for a permanent licence.

Adding a New Vehicle Category to an Old Licence

Suppose you already have a driving licence and want to add another vehicle type, like upgrading from a two-wheeler to a four-wheeler licence. In that case, you can apply for category addition. You must hold a valid learner’s licence first and appear for a driving test after 30 days.

Licence Renewal and Duplicate Licence

Driving licences must be renewed after expiration. Please note that a 30-day grace period is in effect. For lost or damaged licences, you can apply for a duplicate.

Updating Licence Details

If you need to update personal details, such as your name or address, or if your smart card number is lost or stolen, the RTO accepts applications for corrections and reissue.

International Driving Permit (IDP)

You can apply for an International Driving Permit by submitting your licence, passport, visa, medical certificate, and photographs. The IDP is valid for one year.

Adding a Transport or Hazardous Goods Category

For commercial vehicle drivers, the RTO allows licence upgrades to include transport vehicles or those carrying hazardous goods. Additionally, you must present relevant age criteria, experience, and certification from a certified driving school.

Registering a New Vehicle

Every new vehicle must be registered with the RTO before it is driven on public roads. In this process, you have to submit the online application, provide the necessary documents like insurance and purchase invoice, and receive your Registration Certificate (RC).

Transfer of Vehicle Ownership

When selling or buying a used vehicle, you have to update the RTO with the ownership transfer. You must submit documents such as the original RC, insurance, PUC, identity/address proof, and chassis imprint.

Adding or Removing Hypothecation

If you purchase your vehicle on finance, you must remove the hypothecation from the RC once the loan is paid off. The RTO will remove the hypothecation after verifying the required documents and the lender's NOC.

Change of Address in RC

Vehicle owners who move to a new address must also update the RC with the new address proof. For this, you will also have to get an NOC from the RTO and submit relevant documents, including the RC, insurance and PUC.

Duplicate RC Issuance

If your RC is lost, damaged, or stolen, you can apply for a duplicate RC by submitting the necessary documents and a police report.

Fitness Certificates for Vehicles

Commercial vehicles must undergo regular fitness tests to ensure they are safe and reliable for road use. The RTO conducts inspections and issues or renews fitness certificates after clearing dues and fees.

The RTO in Ahmedabad issues different types of number plates depending on the category, purpose, and ownership of the vehicle. These number plates are assigned as per the Motor Vehicles Act and help authorities identify and regulate vehicles across the city.

The following types of number plates are commonly issued at the Sabarmati (GJ-01) and Vastral (GJ-27) RTO
offices:

• White Number Plate: This is issued to private vehicle owners. It indicates that the vehicle is for personal use only and is not meant for any commercial activity.
• Red Number Plate: A temporary red number plate is provided for new vehicles. It remains valid until the vehicle is permanently registered at the RTO in Ahmedabad.
• Blue Number Plate: Vehicles owned and operated by foreign diplomats or embassies are given blue number plates. These often start with diplomatic codes such as UN, CC, or CD.
• Black Number Plate: This plate is used on commercial vehicles that are available for self-drive rental. It signifies that the vehicle is for hire but will not be driven by the service provider.
• Red Number Plate with India Emblem: These are reserved for high-ranking government officials. The plate includes the national emblem to indicate the official status of the vehicle.
• Number Plate with Upward Arrow: This special number plate is issued to military vehicles. It features an upward-pointing arrow that signifies defence or army ownership.

To get a vehicle permanently registered at Ahmedabad RTO online, you should follow these steps:

• Step 1: Download the RTO Form 20 from the official Ahmedabad RTO website. You can choose either the English or Gujarati version, according to your preference.
• Step 2: Fill out the form and submit it, along with the necessary documents and proof of tax payment and fee, to the nearest RTO.
• Step 3: A trained inspector will assess the vehicle. This might not be required if the authorised dealer has already done the inspection.
• Step 4: After verifying the details, the RTO office issues a unique registration number for your vehicle.

The Registration Certificate (RC) is sent to your registered address through a speed post. In case you have a temporary registration number, you must obtain a permanent one before the temporary registration expires.
