Hyundai Sonata Car Insurance

Hyundai discontinued the Sonata in India in 2015 after weak demand for its petrol-only executive sedan. So, buying Hyundai Sonata insurance is a renewal decision for existing owners, not a new-car purchase.

The Sonata appealed to senior professionals and business families seeking comfort comparable to the Honda Accord, automatic transmission and refined highway performance. Its premium experience offered an attractive alternative to costlier German luxury sedans.

However, the Sonata's long bonnet, low ground clearance and ageing components can create specific ownership risks. Speed-breaker scrapes, tight-parking dents and scarce spare parts may increase repair costs.

Hyundai Sonata car insurance from TATA AIG offers wide coverage with 24x7 roadside assistance, cashless repairs at network garages and suitable add-ons.

If you are looking for the best car insurance in India, explore protection options that match your Sonata's changing insurance needs.

  Important Tip!

Every Sonata on Indian roads today is pre-owned, since showroom sales ended in 2015. If you buy from a private seller, transfer the running policy to your name within 14 days, or buy fresh car insurance online from TATA AIG.

  • How to Renew:

  • Step 1: At the top of this page you will find “Renew your TATA AIG car policy” or use our mobile app.

  • Step 2: Enter your car registration number or your expiring policy number.

  • Step 3: Check the renewal premium quoted for your Sonata insurance plan.

  • Step 5: Pay online and save the renewed policy for your records.

  Please Note:

Why Insure Your Hyundai Sonata?

  • Third-Party Cover is Mandatory, Even for a 2015 Car Model: Third-party cover is compulsory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. A first offence of not having one carries a penalty of up to ₹2,000 and possible imprisonment of three months.

The insurance premium depends on your car’s engine capacity, not its age. The 2.4-litre Sonata falls under the above-1,500cc category, with a third-party Hyundai Sonata insurance price of ₹7,897 per year.   Buy it standalone, or as part of a comprehensive insurance policy that also protects your Sonata.

  • Your Car Variant Can Have Different Repair Costs: The Sonata launched as a loaded flagship with premium features. Parking sensors are on both bumpers, and the reversing camera is in the boot lid. Projector headlamps and a sunroof with dedicated drainage channels add to its complexity.

Even a kerb-speed parking knock can damage the bumper, sensors or camera. Spare parts may also require special orders, increasing repair times and costs. Four-wheeler insurance cover for your Sonata can save you money on repairs.

  • Network Garages for Reliable Hyundai Sonata Repairs:

Sonata car insurance from TATA AIG gives you cashless repair across 6,300+ network garages, including Hyundai authorised service centres. We settle the bill with the garage, so you pay only the deductibles and exclusions.   For a discontinued sedan, that access matters. Diagnosing sensors and control modules requires brand-specific equipment, and an authorised workshop is the surest route to the right parts.

  • Protect Your Low-Slung Sonata Against Flood and Fire Damage:

The Sonata has lower ground clearance than Hyundai SUVs, which makes underbody scrapes and water exposure a concern during monsoons. Waterlogged roads and flooded parking areas can damage the car’s electrical components and interior.   Comprehensive insurance covers eligible damage from floods, fire, storms, earthquakes and riots.   You can buy car insurance online from TATA AIG and explore suitable coverage for your Hyundai Sonata.

  • Hyundai Sonata Insurance Protects Against Theft and Total Loss:

Sonata insurance becomes especially valuable if your car gets stolen or suffers total loss. Theft can happen in driveways, roadside parking areas, office basements or market parking lots.   A stolen or written-off Sonata could mean losing the car’s insured value, known as the Insured Declared Value (IDV). TATA AIG offers coverage for eligible losses, subject to policy terms and conditions.   Choosing a realistic IDV at renewal helps you balance protection and premium costs. It offers better financial protection

Hyundai Sonata Insurance: Which Policy Do I Get?

Car Insurance Policies We Offer:   Comprehensive Car Insurance:

A comprehensive insurance policy covers your Sonata and your liability to others under one plan. It is a sensible choice if the car still holds meaningful value, carries its original electronics, or is parked on the street.   Buy Comprehensive Car Insurance

  • Third-Party Car Insurance: Third-party four-wheeler insurance covers the legal minimum, fixed by IRDAI at ₹7,897 a year for the 2.4-litre 1,989cc to 2,497cc Sonata. Suits a car that rarely leaves the garage and has a low declared value.

  Buy Third-Party Car Insurance

  • Standalone Own Damage Car Insurance: Own-damage car insurance covers damage to your Sonata alone, and needs a valid third-party policy running alongside. Useful if your existing liability cover still has time left.

  Buy Own-Damage Car Insurance

  • Does Your Variant Change Your Insurance Choice?: The 2012 Hyundai Sonata came with a 2.4-litre petrol engine and manual or automatic transmission options. This means engine size does not create a major premium difference between variants.

The car’s condition and equipment matter more when you choose four-wheeler insurance. A Sonata with working sunroof drainage, parking sensors and original projector lamps may cost more to repair than one with missing or damaged parts.   Your car’s mileage, accident history and parking location can also influence the insurance rates for a Hyundai Sonata. Consider these factors when choosing the right cover for your Sonata.

  • What Policy Do I Buy? Insurance for Different Types of Owners:

Owner Type Recommended Cover Why
Low-use second car Third-party Insurance Legal cover at the lowest outlay when the car barely moves.
Weekend or hobby owner Comprehensive Insurance + Key Replacement Add-on Long parked spells raise theft, rodent and lock-tampering risk.
Daily city commuter Comprehensive Insurance + Repair of Glass, Fibre, Plastic and Rubber Parts Add-on Repair of city-traffic scrapes without losing your No Claim Bonus stays protected.
Family owner Comprehensive Insurance + Emergency Medical Expenses Add on Covers treatment and ambulance charges for everyone travelling.
Highway and long-distance driver Comprehensive Insurance Insurance + Roadside Assistance Add-on + Additional Towing Charges Add-on Breakdown support matters most on a car this age, far from a workshop.
Street-parked owner Comprehensive Insurance + Loss of Personal Belongings Add-On Higher exposure to break-ins and opportunistic damage.
Chauffeur-driven owner Comprehensive Insurance + Additional Third-party Property Damage Add-On Higher city exposure, and the ₹7.5 lakh standard limit can fall short.
Owner with valid third-party cover Standalone Own Damage Insurance Adds car protection without duplicating liability cover.

  • Please note: Add-on availability depends on vehicle age, eligibility and policy terms.

Hyundai Sonata Car Insurance Add-On Covers Worth Buying

Hyundai discontinued the Sonata in India in 2015, but many owners still drive this premium sedan. The right add-ons can provide extra protection for everyday use, repairs and unexpected emergencies.   Add-Ons to Consider for Your Hyundai Sonata:

  • Roadside Assistance: Get help with punctures, jump-starts, minor on-the-spot repairs, fuel delivery, lockouts and towing. This add-on suits owners who travel on highways, drive alone or frequently travel at night. Hyundai’s original warranty assistance may have expired, but TATA AIG roadside assistance can provide eligible support, subject to policy terms.

  • Key Replacement: Covers eligible key-replacement costs, damaged locks and related labour expenses. The key replacement add-on can help when finding replacement keys for an older Sonata becomes difficult.

  • Repair of Glass, Fibre, Plastic and Rubber Parts: Covers eligible repairs to these parts without applying depreciation, subject to the add-on terms. This can help manage repair costs after minor accidents.

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Covers eligible medical treatment and ambulance expenses after an insured accident, subject to policy terms.

  • Additional Third-party Property Damage Cover: Provides extra protection beyond the standard third-party property-damage limit, subject to the policy terms.

  • Additional Towing Charges: Helps cover eligible towing expenses beyond the standard policy limit.

  • Loss of Personal Belongings: Covers eligible personal items lost or damaged during an insured event, subject to the policy terms.

  • Emergency Transport and Hotel Expenses: The emergency transport and hotel expenses helps with eligible transport and hotel costs after a covered accident, subject to the add-on conditions.

  Important Note:

Add-ons have age limits. TATA AIG offers the add-ons listed above for cars up to 15 years old, subject to eligibility

What Affects Your Hyundai Sonata Insurance Cost

The average insurance cost for a Hyundai Sonata has two parts that behave differently. The regulator sets one, and it is the same across insurers. The other depends on your car, your city and your claim history, and that is the part worth understanding.

  • The Fixed Part: Third-Party Premium:

Third-party insurance rates for Hyundai Sonata depend on engine capacity, not your car’s market value. The Hyundai Sonata’s 2.4-litre petrol engine falls under the above-1,500cc category. The published annual base premium for this category is ₹7,897, before applicable taxes.   This rate applies across insurers, though it may change when regulators revise it.

  • The Variable Part: Own-Damage Premium:

Your own-damage premium depends on several factors that matter for an older Hyundai Sonata.

What moves it Why it matters on a Sonata
IDV After eleven years of depreciation, the base for your own-damage premium is modest, and so is your total loss payout.
Add-ons Only the fifteen-year set applies, which keeps the loading lighter than on a newer car.
City of registration Metro registration raises the rate through higher traffic density, theft incidence and labour costs.
No Claim Bonus Five claim-free years cut the own-damage premium by half.
Claim history Frequent claims mark the car as higher risk and increase the renewal cost.

What You Can Do:

  • Compare insurance quotes: Compare comprehensive and third-party-only quotes before renewing your Hyundai Sonata insurance. Third-party cover protects against covered third-party liabilities, but it does not cover damage to your own car.

  • Consider comprehensive cover: Comprehensive insurance can suit Sonata owners who rely on their cars for daily commutes or highway travel. Theft and total-loss protection can remain valuable, even for an older car with a lower IDV.

  • Choose suitable add-ons: Select add-ons based on your actual driving needs. TATA AIG offers RSA, Key Replacement, Glass/Fibre/Plastic/Rubber Parts and Additional Towing Charges covers for eligible cars up to 15 years old.

  • Think about replacement costs: Could you replace your Sonata comfortably if it were stolen or written off tomorrow? Consider this to decide the coverage you need for your car.

What IDV Should You Set for Your Hyundai Sonata?

IDV is the value you choose for your car when buying insurance. It means Insured Declared Value, or your car’s current market value after depreciation. The IDV also decides the maximum payout if your Sonata is stolen or written off. A higher IDV may increase your premium, while a lower IDV may reduce your payout.   Since the Hyundai Sonata is a discontinued model, you and TATA AIG agree on its IDV. For cars older than five years, the policy does not simply follow the standard depreciation table.   Your Sonata is now over eleven years old, so choosing the right IDV also helps you decide whether comprehensive insurance is worth keeping.   The Trade-Off:

If you set IDV Your premium If the car is stolen or written off
Low, to save money Lower You receive less, and the shortfall is yours to cover
At market value Fair for the cover You receive a sum that reflects what the car was worth
Above market value Higher A figure out of line with the car’s condition will result in an unnecessarily high premium but no added benefit.

The write-off limit matters more for an older Sonata. It may be declared a constructive total loss when repair costs reach 75% of the IDV.   For example, a Sonata with a low IDV can reach this limit even after damage that looks repairable.   A low IDV means two things:

  • You receive a smaller Sonata insurance claim payout if the car is stolen or written off.- Your car may be written off instead of repaired when repair costs reach 75% of the IDV.

Choose an IDV that reflects your Sonata’s current market value.

  • What IDV to Set on a Sonata: Check the figure rather than accepting the default. The Sonata was a ₹20 lakh executive sedan, and a well-kept example with working electronics holds value above a neglected one of the same year. Condition, ownership history and service records drive that gap.

Return to Invoice would close any shortfall between IDV and replacement cost, but it caps at five years, so it is unavailable on this model.

  • The Mistake to Avoid:

Setting IDV low because it is an old car could be a costly mistake. If you hold comprehensive cover, hold it at a value that would get you back on the road. If that value is not worth the premium, third-party is the honest alternative.   One assurance helps here. We do not negotiate IDV at claim time. The figure on your policy is the figure we work from.   Get Hyundai Sonata Insurance Today with TATA AIG!

How to File a Hyundai Sonata Car Insurance Claim

Cashless Claim:

With a cashless claim, your Sonata goes to a garage inside our network, and we pay the approved repair amount straight to that garage.

  • Intimate the claim: Tell us what happened as soon as possible. Reach us on 022-6489-8282, email general.claims@tataaig.com, or WhatsApp 9136160375. You can also log it on the claims page, through the TATA AIG mobile app, or by scanning our QR code. You can also visit your nearest branch office. You will receive a claim reference number and a dedicated claim handler.
  • Pick a network garage: Take the car to a TATA AIG network garage for cashless billing. Hyundai authorised service centres are also a part of this network wherever they are listed.
  • Wait for the survey: A surveyor visits or a video inspection is arranged. Losses reported before 2 pm are usually surveyed the same day. Do not get any repairs done until you receive approval from TATA AIG.
  • Proceed with Repairs: The garage begins approved repair work. Any hidden damage found midway goes back to the surveyor for reassessment before it's added to the claim.
  • Pay your share: We settle the repair bill directly with the garage. You're responsible only for the deductible, depreciation on replaced parts and items your policy doesn't cover.

  Reimbursement Claim:

Reimbursement suits you when the Sonata is repaired somewhere outside our cashless network.

  • Intimate the claim: Contact us promptly on 022-6489-8282, at general.claims@tataaig.com, or over WhatsApp at 9136160375. The claims page, the TATA AIG mobile app and our QR code intimation all work the same way. A visit to your nearest branch office is equally acceptable.
  • Wait for the survey: Assessment happens physically or digitally, where you upload photographs and video. Starting repairs first risks losing the evidence a surveyor needs.
  • Repair the car: Once you have approval, use any authorised garage. Once you get the repairs done, keep every original invoice, receipt and estimate.
  • Submit documents: Send the claim form with your repair invoices, payment receipts and estimates. Please note that missing paperwork causes most delays in claim settlement.
  • Receive payment: Settlement follows within seven days of receiving complete documentation, and is paid by NEFT after applicable deductions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Hyundai Sonata hybrid car insurance available in India?

iconDown

The Sonata Hybrid was never sold in India. Hyundai offered only the 2.4-litre petrol Sonata in India before withdrawing the model in 2015, so there is no hybrid variant to insure. If you own another Hyundai hybrid or electric car, you may choose TATA AIG four-wheeler insurance to cover that.

Does a claim-free Sonata still earn a No Claim Bonus at this age?

iconDown

Yes. NCB attaches to the policyholder, not the car, and rises from 20% after one claim-free year to a maximum of 50% after five. It applies to the own-damage portion of your four-wheeler insurance, so a third-party-only policy does not offer an NCB discount.

Can I take a multi-year Sonata Insurance policy?

iconDown

Only the third-party portion can generally be purchased for multiple years. Own-damage cover is usually issued for one year and must be renewed annually. Multi-year plans mainly follow the three-year third-party rule for cars registered after September 2018. Your Sonata predates this requirement. Also, note that add-ons have separate age limits. Therefore, options such as Depreciation Reimbursement and Engine Secure may not be available for your older Sonata.
