Tata Movus Car Insurance

People looking at a Tata Movus today are not exactly shopping for a new car. They are looking for an affordable used MUV with generous seating and practical everyday usability. However, the vehicle's previous use can make a difference when choosing the Tata Movus insurance.

An ex-taxi Movus may have higher mileage and more wear from years of passenger transport, making its condition and repair needs important factors when choosing insurance. Whereas, for privately used Movus vehicles, the focus may instead be on managing the cost of accidental damage, theft or other events.

Since the model was discontinued in March 2016, repairability and the vehicle's current IDV also deserve particular attention. To mitigate the financial impact, comprehensive insurance can help pay for repairs after accidents and other incidents.

TATA AIG's 6,300+ cashless garages across India, including Tata Motors authorised service centres, can be useful when an older Movus needs repairs.

Was Your Tata Movus a Taxi? Registration Type & Why It Matters

The Tata Movus was sold to private buyers as well as fleet and taxi operators, thanks to its 7/8/9-seater layout and low running costs. This makes a commercial registration history possible in the used-car market. This matters because private and commercial car policies are different products, and the policy must match the registration on the RC.

Check the RC for:

  • Vehicle Class: Confirm private or commercial use.
  • Plate Colour: A yellow plate indicates commercial registration.
  • Permit and Fitness Certificate: Check these for commercial vehicles.
  • Road Tax: Private vehicles pay one-time/lifetime tax, while commercial vehicles may pay periodically.

If you are buying a used Movus with an existing private car policy, transfer it to your name within 14 days. After this period, the new owner's own-damage cover may lapse.

If converting the Movus from commercial to private use, first apply to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for the required registration change and endorsement. Update the insurance policy only after the RC reflects private registration.

A private policy on a commercially registered Movus can lead to claim rejection. Also, the seller’s No Claim Bonus (NCB) does not transfer to you. For an ex-taxi Movus, consider high mileage and usage when determining its IDV.

How to Buy & Renew Tata Movus Insurance Online

How to Buy

  1. Go to the top of this webpage, enter your Tata Movus registration number and select ‘Get Price’.

  2. Fill in your personal and vehicle details to generate a car insurance quote. Be precise about your variant and seating configuration. For example, an LX 9-seater is priced differently from a base CX, and this changes your IDV.

  3. Review the available coverage and choose add-ons based on your vehicle's age, condition and usage. Given the diesel engine, high ground clearance and heavy fleet/taxi history most Movus units carry, Roadside Assistance is worth prioritising.

  4. Confirm the Tata Movus insurance premium displayed, then pay online to activate your policy right away.

  5. You can also purchase the policy through the TATA AIG mobile app by selecting the ‘Buy Policy’ option.

A discontinued model is still insurable. Every Movus on the road today is used, and the process works the same way for a pre-owned unit.

How to Renew

  1. Go to the top of this webpage and select 'Renew your existing TATA AIG car policy'.

  2. Look up your policy using your Tata Movus's registration number or your current policy number.

  3. Review the renewal premium quoted online and check the No Claim Bonus carried forward from your last policy year. A claim-free year brings that number down further.

  4. Before confirming, take a fresh look at your cover. Get the applicable add-ons you need.

  5. Pay the Tata Movus car insurance price online, and your policy renews without any gap in cover. The TATA AIG mobile app supports the same car insurance online renewal flow if you'd rather use your phone.

Note: If your Tata Movus policy has lapsed for more than 90 days, an inspection is required before Tata Movus car insurance renewal. TATA AIG will confirm if this applies to you.

Drive On, Worry-Free and Secure Your Tata Movus with TATA AIG Car Insurance!

Why Insure Your Tata Movus?

Third-Party Coverage is a Legal Requirement

Third-party motor insurance is mandatory for vehicles driven on Indian roads. Driving without it can attract a fine of ₹2,000 for the first offence and ₹4,000 for subsequent offences, or imprisonment of up to three months, or both.

Liability is sized by the harm caused, not by what you drive. The 2179cc Movus can generate the same injury claim as any new SUV, since compensation depends on the victim's income and dependants, not your car's value.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) regulates third-party rates. You can choose a standalone third-party policy or a comprehensive policy that includes this cover.

Cashless Repairs Without Paying Upfront

TATA AIG has a 6,300+ cashless garage network across India, which can help with an older Movus when access to a nearby repair facility matters. Pick-up and drop-off services can further simplify cashless repairs.

Covers Fire, Natural & Man-Made Disasters

Tata Movus car insurance can cover damage caused by events such as floods, storms, cyclones, earthquakes, fire and explosions. For an older Movus, this can help with repair costs after debris, falling branches or other disaster-related impacts.

Covers Theft & Total Loss

Ex-fleet Movus units are frequent theft targets, since spares are scarce and the donor-car market pays well for parts. On a discontinued model, own-damage cover is not repair insurance, it is an exit insurance. If your Movus is stolen or damaged beyond repair, you get the Insured Declared Value (IDV) of your car.

Tata Movus Insurance -- Which Policy Do I Get?

Car Insurance Policies We Offer

Comprehensive Car Insurance

Tata Movus comprehensive car insurance covers third-party liability along with damage to your own car from theft, natural disasters, fire, flood and other insured events. Add-ons let you tailor the insurance according to the car’s age and condition.

Buy Comprehensive Car Insurance

Third-Party Car Insurance

A Tata Movus has a 2,179cc diesel engine, so the Tata Movus third-party insurance premium falls under the 1500 cc+ engine-capacity band set by the IRDAI, it remains the same for all insurers. The insurance for a third-party policy covers your legal liability for injury, death or property damage caused to third parties, but does not cover damage to your Movus.

Buy Third-Party Car Insurance

Standalone Own-Damage Car Insurance

If your Tata Movus already has valid third-party cover, a standalone own-damage policy can protect the vehicle itself. For a discontinued Movus, Tata Movus own damage insurance can be particularly useful against accidental damage, theft, fire and natural calamities, where finding replacement parts or repairing an older vehicle may be costly.

Buy Own-Damage Car Insurance

Which Policy Do I Buy?

Parameter Recommended Cover Why
Car bought second-hand this year Comprehensive + Roadside Assistance Provides own-damage protection for an older Movus, while roadside assistance can help with breakdowns.
High-mileage owner (ex-fleet/taxi use) Comprehensive + Roadside Assistance A heavily used Movus may face greater on-road breakdown exposure, making roadside assistance particularly useful.
10+ year-old car with low IDV Standalone OD (if TP is active) or Comprehensive A lower IDV can reduce the cost of own-damage cover, while the policy can still provide protection against theft, total loss and covered damage.
Older car you still depend on daily Comprehensive + Additional Towing Charges Comprehensive cover protects against covered damage, while Additional Towing Charges can help with towing expenses after an insured accident.
Flood-prone location Comprehensive The base policy covers damage caused by events such as flood, storm and inundation.
Rural/poor road surfaces Comprehensive + Roadside Assistance Frequent travel on uneven roads can increase the chance of breakdowns or accidental damage, making own-damage and roadside support useful for an older Movus.

Important Tip!

For a discontinued Tata Movus, it comes down to what the vehicle is still worth versus how much you depend on it. A low IDV can make third-party insurance sufficient. If it is still your daily use vehicle or family car, comprehensive or own-damage cover is the safer bet.

Tata Movus Car Insurance Add-On Covers Worth Buying

Most add-ons carry age limits, and they matter here. If your Movus is up to 15 years old, Roadside Assistance and Additional Towing Charges are worth considering. These covers can be particularly useful if you rely on your Movus for daily travel or long-distance journeys.

Here are some of the add-ons you must consider that are available for cars up to 15-year-old:

Roadside Assistance

This is the strongest case for any Movus buyer. The vehicle's original manufacturer warranty has likely expired roughly a decade ago, so there's no factory backup left if you break down. RSA covers flat tyres, jump starts, on-the-spot repairs, towing and fuel delivery. This is worth having if you regularly drive on highways, travel at night, head into areas where mechanics are scarce, or drive alone.

Repair of Glass, Fibre, Plastic & Rubber Parts

Does not change whether a claim gets paid, it protects your NCB when it does. If you opt for repair over replacement on these parts at an authorised garage, this keeps your no-claim discount intact. This applies only if you make this one claim during that year.

Additional Towing Charges

This tops up the towing cover already included under Roadside Assistance, useful if your Movus needs towing from a remote location where charges run higher than the standard limit covers. Eligible up to 15 years, so it holds for this model.

Important Note: Since the Tata Movus was discontinued in March 2016, its age varies depending on the year of manufacture or sale. Models sold before 2016 are older and may have fewer add-on options available. So, the add-on decision is not about maximising coverage, it is about picking from what is actually still on offer. Roadside Assistance is worth prioritising if your Movus is eligible, particularly if you rely on it for daily travel or long-distance journeys.

Note: Add-on availability is subject to the vehicle meeting TATA AIG's eligibility criteria, including age limits, at the time of purchase or renewal.

What IDV Should You Set for Your Tata Movus?

The IDV is the amount used as the sum insured for your Tata Movus. It is also the maximum amount payable for a total loss, constructive total loss (CTL) or total theft.

Because the Movus is a discontinued model and is more than five years old, its IDV is not simply calculated using the standard age-based depreciation table. IDV for vehicles over five years old or obsolete/discontinued models is determined through an understanding between the insurer and the insured.

The Trade-Off

If you set the IDV Your premium If the car is stolen or written off
Low, to save money Lower You receive less, so any shortfall is yours to bear.
At a realistic value Based on the agreed IDV You receive the applicable IDV for a total loss, theft or CTL.
Higher than the vehicle's actual value Higher It does not guarantee a higher claim payout. The IDV must be agreed with the insurer.

The Part Older Movus Owners Often Miss

For a discontinued Movus, the agreed IDV becomes particularly important because the standard age-depreciation table no longer determines the value. A vehicle becomes a constructive total loss when the aggregate cost of retrieval and/or repair exceeds 75% of its IDV.

For example, if the agreed IDV is ₹1,00,000, to save on premium, repair and retrieval costs exceeding ₹75,000 can meet the CTL threshold. A low IDV can therefore affect both the total-loss payout and the point at which the vehicle is treated as a CTL.

What IDV Should You Set for a Tata Movus?

Start with the value of comparable Movus vehicles from the same year, with the same fuel type and similar mileage and condition. In the used market, Tata Movus ranges in between ₹3 lakh to ₹4 lakh. This is particularly important for the Movus because examples with heavy ex-fleet or taxi use may command less than privately used cars.

Do not inflate the IDV simply to increase the potential payout. For an obsolete model, you and the insurer agree to the IDV, and TATA AIG's policy treats it as the market value for total loss, theft and CTL claims.

The Mistake to Avoid

Do not choose an unusually low IDV just because the Tata Movus is old. If you are retaining comprehensive cover, set an IDV that reasonably reflects the vehicle's agreed value. If the available IDV makes own-damage cover unsuitable for your needs, third-party-only cover may be more appropriate.

What Affects Your Tata Movus's Insurance Cost

Your premium has two parts that behave very differently. One is fixed by the regulator and is identical across insurers. The other depends on your car, your city and your claim history, and that's the part worth understanding.

The Fixed Part: Third-Party Premium

The Movus was sold with a single 2179cc diesel engine across both CX and LX trims, so every variant falls into the same cc band.

Engine CC 1-Year TP Premium
2179cc (Above 1,500cc band) ₹7,897

The Variable Part: Own-Damage Premium

What Moves It Why It Matters
IDV The Movus is discontinued, so its agreed IDV is particularly important and directly affects the own-damage premium.
Fuel-System Modifications A factory-fitted fuel system should match the RC and policy schedule. An aftermarket CNG/LPG kit is a modification and must be declared and endorsed.
Add-Ons Any eligible add-ons increase the premium. For an older Movus, age limits may leave fewer options.
City of Registration The location of registration affects the own-damage premium because risk varies by area.
No Claim Bonus (NCB) A claim-free history can reduce the own-damage premium through NCB.
Claim History Previous claims can affect the premium at renewal and the NCB available.

For a Movus, the IDV and age deserve particular attention. Since it was discontinued in 2016 and is now an older used vehicle, the standard assumptions used for a new car do not apply.

What You Can Do

  • Don't select an artificially low figure simply to reduce the premium. For a discontinued Movus, IDV also determines the financial protection available for theft or total loss.

  • If your Movus was converted during its fleet or taxi life, make sure the conversion is reflected in the RC and policy.

  • The Movus's age can make several repair-focused add-ons unavailable, so don't pay for protection you cannot actually use.

  • For an older Movus with a relatively low IDV, preserving an accumulated NCB can be more meaningful than repeatedly claiming for small repair bills.

Standard Inclusions and Exclusions Under Tata Movus Insurance

What's Covered?

Event Standard Comprehensive Cover? Important Caveat
Accidental damage Yes Subject to policy terms, exclusions and applicable deductible.
Flood, earthquake, storm, cyclone, landslide Yes Water-ingress damage to the engine is not automatically covered under the base policy.
Fire and explosion Yes Subject to the policy terms and exclusions.
Riot, strike, malicious damage, terrorism Yes Subject to applicable policy terms.
Theft Yes Settlement is based on the applicable IDV.
Total/constructive total loss Yes CTL applies when retrieval and/or repair costs exceed 75% of the IDV.
Third-party injury/death Yes Compensation for third-party bodily injury or death is determined legally
Third-party property damage Yes Limited to ₹7.5 lakh
Transit damage Yes Subject to the policy terms and conditions.
Owner-driver personal accident Yes Cover can be up to ₹15 lakh, subject to eligibility

What's Not Covered?

  • Wear and Tear/Depreciation: Normal wear and tear and applicable depreciation on parts are not covered under the standard own-damage policy. This is particularly relevant for an older, high-mileage car like Movus.

  • Unauthorised Modifications: An aftermarket CNG/LPG kit, alloy wheels, audio equipment or other modifications must be declared and appropriately endorsed. An undeclared modification can affect a claim.

  • Mechanical/Electrical Breakdown: The policy does not cover ordinary mechanical or electrical breakdowns. This includes ageing or wear-related failures that are particularly relevant to a discontinued Movus.

  • Consequential Loss: Further damage caused by continuing to drive after an initial incident may not be covered. For example, continuing to drive a Movus after an accident despite signs of engine trouble could result in subsequent damage being treated as consequential loss.

  • Other Issues: Illegal use, war-related events, ionising radiation and damage occurring outside India are generally excluded. The policy can, subject to its terms and additional premium, extend geographical coverage to Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Reimbursement Claim

  1. Register your claim through the claims portal, mobile app, branch, by calling 022-6489-8282, emailing general.claims@tataaig.com or WhatsApping 9136160375. In a reimbursement claim, you pay the repair expenses first and claim the admissible amount from TATA AIG.

  2. Get the Tata Movus inspected and obtain the required approval before beginning repairs.

  3. If you carry out repairs at a non-network garage, pay the repair bill yourself and submit the required documents for reimbursement.

  4. Keep the original invoices, payment receipts, repair bills and other required claim documents. Missing documents can delay processing.

  5. TATA AIG settles reimbursement claims within 7 days after receiving the documents, through NEFT. Keep in mind, the reimbursed amount may be lower than the repair bill after deductibles, depreciation, exclusions and other policy conditions.

For the discontinued Movus: Genuine replacement parts may be harder to source. If the vehicle cannot be economically repaired, the claim may be assessed as a total or constructive total loss. This makes having a realistic IDV particularly important.
