Tata Spacio Car Insurance

The Tata Sumo Spacio is a rugged, spacious multi-utility vehicle (MUV) designed as an affordable and no-frills version of the classic Tata Sumo. The Spacio’s high ground clearance and durable suspension make it suitable for rough, rural roads, while its 6-10 seater configuration makes it perfect for a joint family. Tata Spacio was discontinued in 2011.

Driving your Tata Spacio in rough road conditions exposes it to numerous risks, whether that’s from impact with potholes or fallen trees or water damage from heavy rains or flooded streets. Car insurance protects your family vehicle from these unforeseen events.

TATA AIG offers affordable Tata Spacio car insurance, including standalone third-party, own damage and comprehensive plans, and personal accident cover for passengers. Also, get access to Tata Motors’ extensive network of authorised service centres with our plan. Explore our plans below.

Was Your Tata Spacio a Taxi? Registration Type & Why It Matters?

Many Tata Spacio vehicles are often used by taxi operators and fleet owners, which means the used vehicle you purchase may have a commercial registration history. This can be an issue if you plan to use the vehicle for personal purposes, as private car insurance cannot be issued for a commercially registered vehicle.

  • Transfer Window That Most Buyers Miss:

When you purchase a second-hand Tata Spacio, you must transfer the existing insurance policy into your name to avoid coverage issues. Third-party cover is generally transferred automatically, but own-damage (OD) cover must be transferred separately. Submit the transfer request along with the required documents within 14 days of the ownership transfer date. Failure to do so may result in the own-damage cover becoming ineffective.

  • What to Check Before Buying a Used Tata Spacio:

  • Registration Type: Check the vehicle's registration type, age, and registration details on the Registration Certificate (RC).

  • Permit and Fitness Certificate: Obtain copies of the permit and fitness certificate required for ownership transfer.

  • State Regulations: Verify the applicable state regulations and age limits for converting a commercial vehicle into a private vehicle.

  • Road Tax: Ensure all applicable road taxes have been paid and there are no pending liabilities.

  • Condition and IDV: A high-mileage, ex-fleet Tata Spacio may have a lower market value and Insured Declared Value (IDV) than a privately owned vehicle in similar condition.

  • No Claim Bonus: The No Claim Bonus (NCB) belongs to the policyholder rather than the vehicle. Eligible NCB benefits can be transferred to the insurance policy of the used vehicle.

  • Insurance for a Tata Spacio Converted to Private Use:

To obtain private Tata Spacio insurance for a vehicle previously registered as a commercial vehicle, you must change the ownership category while transferring the Registration Certificate (RC) at your local Regional Transport Office (RTO). You can also apply for ownership transfer through the Parivahan Portal along with documents such as the old RC, permit, fitness certificate, and other required records.

  • Applying for a Private Policy on a Commercial Vehicle Risks Rejection:

Your application for private Tata Spacio insurance may be rejected if the vehicle continues to have a commercial registration. Ensure the vehicle has been legally re-registered as a private vehicle and that the updated RC has been issued before applying for private car insurance.

Why Insure Your Tata Spacio?

  • Third-Party Coverage is a Legal Requirement: The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, makes third-party insurance mandatory for every vehicle on public roads in the country. If the traffic authorities catch you driving an uninsured Tata Spacio, you can face fines from ₹2000 to ₹4000, jail for up to 3 months or both.

Getting third-party insurance covers both small fines and legal compensation you have to pay for causing injuries, fatalities or property damage.

  • Cashless Repairs Without Paying Upfront: Tata Motor offers an extensive network of 1600+ workshops covering 90% of the country’s districts. Most of these service centres are also a part of TATA AIG’s 6300+ garage network, ensuring you can get cashless repairs anywhere.

Getting our online insurance for cars lets you access 24/7 customer support, pick-up and drop-off services and a dedicated claims handler to assist you.

  • Covers Fire, Natural & Man-Made Disasters: Driving your Tata Spacio across rural and semi-urban areas exposes you to the risk of heavy monsoon rains, landslides, and seasonal hurricanes. An engine fire caused by a fuel leak can cause irreparable damage to your Spacio, while falling tree branches can crack the windshield.

Our Tata Spacio car insurance covers repairs, parts and the replacement of your vehicle up to the Insured Declared Value (IDV) with no salvage deductions or IDV negotiations during claim payouts.

  • Covers Theft & Total Loss: When your family and friends depend on you for transportation, the loss of your vehicle from accidents, fire or theft is a massive risk. Whether you have parked your Tata Spacio at home or by the roadside, your essential transport is vulnerable to theft. Rising cases of vehicle theft make Tata Spacio insurance necessary.

Get our plans to cover replacement costs up to the Insured Declared Value, with flexibility to choose an insured value based on your insurance needs.

Tata Spacio Car Insurance Add-On Covers Worth Buying

None of our car insurance add-on covers are available for the Tata Spacio. This is because the Tata Spacio was discontinued in 2011, which is beyond the scope of the add-ons. Our add-ons have a maximum age cap of 15 years for insured vehicles.   Fortunately, it’s not really bad news, as the usefulness of add-ons depends on your driving and financial requirements. While add-ons enhance what’s covered under standard car insurance plans, they are not necessary for a very old car like the Tata Spacio.   Standard Tata Spacio insurance plans cover most risks that can damage your MUV, including accidental damage, fire, burglary, floods, landslides, riots, vandalism, etc. An own damage car insurance covers loss and damage to your Tata Spacio while third-party car insurance covers your legal costs and losses due to causing injuries, fatalities or property damage to other persons.   For an old or second-hand Tata Spacio, the most important decision is whether to get comprehensive or third-party car insurance or whether to add an own damage cover if you already have third-party insurance. You also need to decide what Insured Declared Value to set for your car insurance.   Because you don’t have to worry about add-ons, the IDV is the most important decision and one that many owners get wrong. Ensure you don’t set an IDV amount too low for your old Spacio to get sufficient financial coverage or too high to avoid unnecessary premium costs.

What IDV Should You Set for Your Tata Spacio?

The Insured Declared Value, or IDV, is your Tata Spacio’s current market value after accounting for depreciation due to ageing, wear and tear. It’s the maximum amount the insurer agrees to pay in the event of a total loss or theft.   For discontinued or obsolete models like the Tata Spacio, the IDV is determined through an agreement between the insurer and the policyholder. Here’s what you need to know to set the right IDV for your Tata Spacio:

  • The Trade Off:

If You Set the IDV…. Your Premium If Your Tata Spacio is Stolen or Written Off
Low (to save money) Decreases You receive a lower reimbursement for theft or total loss claims and have to pay the rest on your own.
High (to maximise coverage) Increases The insurance caps your payout at the Spacio’s current market value. You waste money on a higher premium because you don’t get extra insurance coverage.
Exact Market Value (for balance) Just right You get a fair market value for replacement while keeping your costs limited.

  • The Part Old Car Owners Miss: Choosing the right IDV is the most important decision on a car with no add-on options. Many second-hand car owners simply select a low IDV to keep their Tata Spacio insurance price low. However, that creates the risk of insufficient payout.

Your car is declared a constructive total loss (CTL) if its repair estimate is more than 75% of its IDV, in which case the insurer covers only your replacement cost. If your IDV is a low amount (e.g., ₹1.5 lakhs), a major damage that is entirely repairable can result in a write-off. A small payout (₹1.5 lakhs) covers neither repairs nor the cost of a new Tata Spacio.

  • What to Set on a Tata Spacio: The Insured Declared Value should ideally be close to the value at which your vehicle is currently sold in the market. Search for comparable examples (same model, fuel type and year of manufacture) in pre-owned online marketplaces or dealerships to find a realistic number. Ex-fleet Tata Spacios have lower IDVs than privately owned cars.
  • The Mistake to Avoid: Avoid setting a low IDV just to shave a small fraction of your premium costs. Similarly, do not set an artificially inflated IDV, as the insurer will only cover replacement cost up to the actual selling price of your Tata Spacio variant.
  • Important: At TATA AIG, we do not negotiate on IDV at the time of claim settlement. We pay the exact figure mentioned in your policy documents.

What Affects Your Tata Spacio Insurance Price

The type of insurance plan you select affects the price you pay. The premium for a bundled or comprehensive plan consists of two components: a fixed third-party component and a variable own damage premium component.

  • The Fixed Part: Third-Party Premium: The IRDAI sets the same set of third-party insurance premium rates across all insurance providers. The rate is fixed and dependent on your Tata Spacio’s engine capacity:

Your Variant Engine Capacity (cc) 1-Year TP Premium 3-Year TP Premium
Tata Sumo Spacio Std 2956 ₹7897 ₹24,596
Tata Spacio Gold 10/6 Str BSII 2956 ₹7897 ₹24,596
Tata Sumo Spacio 2956 ₹7897 ₹24,596
Tata Spacio 6 Seater 2956 ₹7897 ₹24,596
Tata Spacio SA 2956 ₹7897 ₹24,596
Tata Spacio ST 2956 ₹7897 ₹24,596

  • The Variable Part: Own Damage Premium: Tata Spacio insurance premium for own damage plans is variable and depends on a wide range of factors, which include the following:
What Moves It Why It Matters on a Tata Spacio
IDV The IDV depends on your car’s current selling price as listed by the manufacturer and the cost of original factory-fitted accessories. A lower IDV decreases the premium, and vice versa.
Variant Tata Spacio comes in different variants, with second-hand prices ranging from ₹4.8 lakhs to ₹5.56 lakhs. A higher price increases the IDV and premium.
City of Registration The risk of accidents and crime in the city where you are registered affects the premium. Cars registered in metro cities carry higher premiums than rural areas.
No Claim Bonus Every year you renew your Spacio insurance, you get a premium discount for every claim-free year. Get NCB discounts range from 20% to 50% on the own damage premium.
Claim History Having a long history of frequently filing minor claims increases the insurer’s risk. This results in the loss of your accumulated NCB and a higher premium cost.

  • What Can You Do About It?:

  • Install Security Devices: Fitting certified security devices such as car alarms and vehicle immobilisers lets you get special premium discounts.

  • Preserve Your No Claim Bonus: Avoid filing frequent minor claims to preserve your accumulated renewal discount.

  • Select a Voluntary Deductible: By choosing to pay a higher deductible at the time of filing a claim, you can get lower premiums.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can I check the current insurance status of my Tata Spacio?

iconDown

You can check your current insurance status on the government’s Parivahan Sewa portal in the ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’ section. Log in using your mobile number and enter your TATA Spacio registration number to view all insurance details.   To check your TATA AIG insurance status, click on ‘My Policy’ at the top of this page. Then, sign in and check your car insurance policy details.

Is 3-year insurance mandatory for my Tata Spacio?

iconDown

Third-party car insurance cover for three years is mandatory for all new vehicle purchases. Since your Tata Spacio is a much older vehicle, you do not need to get 3-year insurance at the time of renewal.

How to find the IDV for my old and second-hand Tata Spacio

iconDown

For vehicles older than 5 years, the IDV amount is decided by mutual agreement between the insurer and the policyholder. The IDV is based on the vehicle’s condition, age and current market trends. Refer to the current selling price on used-car portals and marketplaces.

What happens if the previous policy on my second-hand Tata Spacio is not transferred?

iconDown

If you fail to transfer the previous policy in your name, the policy will lapse, and you will have an uninsured car. While the third-party cover is automatically transferred, you need to apply to change the records within 14 days, or it will expire. Then, you will need to buy a new car insurance plan.

Is the zero depreciation add-on available for a second-hand Tata Spacio?

iconDown

Our zero depreciation or depreciation reimbursement add-on is available for both new and second-hand vehicles up to 10 years old. Since the Tata Spacio is a much older vehicle, you cannot get this add-on for your car.
