Applying For A Passport In Bangalore

Passports are a necessity no matter where you live. They also serve as a means of identification when you travel overseas. Over the last few years, the demand for passports has increased due to globalisation and more people wanting to travel overseas.

So, in addition to a passport, consider getting travel insurance. A passport can facilitate your trip and make it possible to travel overseas, but a travel insurance plan provides financial support in case of emergencies.

No one wants to have their trip ruined or cut short because of unplanned circumstances like lost luggage, lost passports, unforeseen medical emergencies, etc. An international travel insurance plan from Tata AIG takes these issues into account to provide travellers with a safety net they can rely on during their trip.

How To Apply For A Passport Using Passport Seva Kendra In Bangalore

Any Indian citizen is eligible to apply for a passport. Today, you can apply for passports no matter where you are, thanks to the online Passport Seva portal that facilitates the application process. There are two main ways you can apply for a passport in Bangalore, online or offline/in-person. A fresh passport can cost ₹1,500, and a passport re-issue can cost ₹2,000. Additionally, you can apply for a passport under a Regular or Tatkal scheme. The processes for both schemes are the same; only the waiting time and cost differ.

For more information on the fee structure, you can refer to this table here.

- Online Passport Application Process In Bangalore

The online application process is the most common application mode because it’s the most convenient and accessible application method for most people. Here is a step-by-step process of applying for a new/re-issue of your passport in Bangalore.

  1. Visit the Passport Seva Kendra official website.

  2. Click on the "New User Registration" option on the homepage's left side.

  3. Fill in all the fields with the relevant details. You need a valid email ID and working phone number for this process.

  4. Once you've filled out the registration form/page, click "Register".

  5. You will be sent a confirmation email on your registered email ID. You can verify your account by clicking on the link provided in the email.

  6. Now that your registered account has been verified, you can log in using your registered login ID.

  7. Next, click on "Apply for New Passport/Re-Issue of Passport".

  8. You can fill out the application form in two ways, either online or by downloading it and then re-uploading it once it's been completed. We advise that you fill it out online, as it's faster and more convenient. However, if you do choose to do it the other way:

a. You can download the E-form through the homepage. Click on the "Download E-form" option under the forms and affidavits tab.

b. You'll have a PDF file that you'll need to fill in. After filling in the download form, click "Validate and Save". It will generate an XML file that needs to be uploaded to the site.

c. You will have to re-upload this form onto the website when going through the application process by clicking on the “Upload E-form” link.

  1. Once you've filled out the application form, click "Submit". You will be redirected to the payment page, where you'll need to pay an application fee. The fee can only be paid online through the site.

  2. You can pay by any online payment method provided on the page. You can expect to see Net banking, SBI challan, UPI, Debit, and Credit Card as some payment methods listed there.

  3. Once your payment has been processed, you can book your appointment at your nearest PSK in Bangalore.

  4. Remember to download and print your application receipt containing your Application Reference Number (ARN). You'll need your ARN number to proceed with the in-person interview at the passport office on the day of your appointment.

  5. Once you've booked and confirmed your appointment, all that's left is for you to attend your interview at the PSK office on the scheduled date and time.

You must bring your application receipt and all the necessary documents on the day of your appointment. Upon successfully verifying your documents and passing the police verification process, your passport will be dispatched to your address through speed post.

You also have the option to reschedule your appointment, but it's advised that you attend on the chosen date, as rescheduling multiple times can cancel your application. Applicants get a maximum of two chances to reschedule. Exceeding this, you will need to register for a new account, repeat the application process and pay the fee again.

Offline Passport Application Process In Bangalore

You also have the option to apply for a passport offline or in-person through a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) office or a Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Bangalore. Here is how you can do that:

  1. Visit a PSK office or RPO and buy an application form from them. You can also download the application form from the Passport Seva website here. It's advised that you download the application form if you have access to a computer, as it saves you from having to pay for one on-site.

  2. Fill out the form and submit it along with the necessary supporting documents back to the PSK office along with the application fee.

  3. After processing your payment, you will receive a file number or application reference number (ARN). The ARN number will be used to signal your turn to attend the verification processes during your in-person interview at the RPO or PSK office in Bangalore.

  4. You must schedule an appointment, and from here on, the process will be the same as it was for the online application process. After verifying your documents and passing the police verification process, you will be issued your passport.

Documents Needed To Apply For A Passport In Bangalore

To apply for a passport, you will need documents that fall under three categories: documents that qualify as your identity proof, address proof, and documents that verify your educational qualifications.

Furthermore, you will also need to bring your birth certificate to present at the RPO or PSK in Bangalore during your application process.

Here are the necessary documents that you will need:

  • Identity Proof: Aadhar Card, Voter ID, PAN card, Driver's Licence, etc.

  • Address Proof: Any utility bills (electricity, gas, water, etc.), Aadhar card, bank passbook, income tax returns (ITR), etc.

  • Education Qualifications (To Apply For A Non-ECR Passport): HSC and SSLC mark sheets/ graduation certifications from a recognised educational board, Bachelor's degree (if available) from a recognised university.

  • Birth certificate issued by a Municipal authority.

[Note: You will need to bring copies and the originals of these documents to present to the PSK office during your passport interview.]

How Can You Track Your Passport In Bangalore?

Once you've undergone the police verification process, you will be notified through SMS or email about when your passport will be dispatched from the passport office. You can also track your application progress through the Passport Seva website here.

You will need your ARN number for this, so remember to maintain your application receipt and keep it safe.

Once your passport has been dispatched through the post, you will be notified through SMS. You can track your passport during this time as well. You will need the consignment number that you've been given through the SMS notification. It can be used to track the whereabouts of your package through the SMS service itself or through the official website of the postal service the PSK in Bangalore is employing.

Is It Possible To Get Your Passport Quickly In Bangalore?

Unlike before, the passport application and dispatch process has been streamlined to be quicker and more efficient. This is mainly due to the government digitising the process and shifting it online, so it's easier and more accessible.

Furthermore, the tedious police verification process that took up to 30 days has now been shortened to a week. However, it may take more time for all metropolitan cities to offer online police verification since it's a new initiative. This pilot project is planned to ensure this process is available city-wide in the near future.

Overall it takes an average of 30 - 45 days to get your passport in Bangalore. This time frame includes the application process, the in-person PSK interview, the police verification, and the time it takes for the passport to get delivered through post.

Conclusion

You should have no trouble finding a passport office in Bangalore as it's a major Indian city. The city has several PSK offices and a Regional Passport Office as well. This ensures that applicants have a streamlined and transparent passport application process when they apply for a new passport.
