Imposing E-challan in Mumbai
To comply with the latest amendments in the Motor Vehicle Act levied in 2019, the Mumbai traffic authorities introduced the e-challan for traffic rule violations in the city.
The e-challan system has helped the Mumbai police to keep a strict vigil on traffic violations. It leads to better vehicle, passenger, and pedestrian traffic management and road safety.
To impose the e-challan in the city, the Mumbai traffic authorities have installed CCTV cameras across different intersections and streets within the city and on highways.
The CCTV cameras record traffic rule violations and road incidents. The offenders are sent an e-challan on their registered contact numbers. The e-challan contains the details about the location and time of the rule violation. It also contains the details of the e-challan payment procedure.
The e-challan system makes penalty payment a convenient process for the offenders as well as the traffic authorities. You need not visit the Mumbai traffic police office personally to pay the penalty and can do it online.

Traffic Rules for Driving/ Riding a Vehicle in Mumbai
Everyone on the road in Mumbai, including drivers, riders, cyclists, and pedestrians, should follow the Mumbai traffic rules and regulations wherever applicable. As seen above, violation of the traffic rules can lead to severe penalties and punishments.
Here are the details for the new Mumbai traffic rules you must follow:
- Traffc Rules for Four-wheelers in Mumbai
From 1st November 2022 onwards, the driver and all passengers on the front and rear seats of a car have to wear a seatbelt in a moving four-wheeler. The rule has been implemented to ensure passenger safety in a moving vehicle.
Non-compliance with this rule attracts a challan in Mumbai.
When driving a four-wheeler, you cannot use a hand-held mobile phone. It can distract you and lead to a fatal road accident. Such incidents can be hazardous for your and other people’s safety on the road. If you are found using a hand-held mobile phone while driving, you can be heavily penalised for it.
There are speed limits for city roads and highways. Do not drive your vehicle over the maximum speed limit. Not only can it endanger your and others’ lives, but it can also lead to a fine.
Be cautious when changing your lane. Always give an indication and change the lane only when it is safe.
Do not drive a four-wheeler in an intoxicated state. You may lose control over the car and cause severe damage to life and property.
Follow the parking rules, and do not park your vehicle in a no-parking zone. Additionally, do not park your vehicle in the middle of the road or at busy corners to avoid blocking the traffic.
Ensure you carry all the necessary vehicle documents and your valid driving licence when driving on Mumbai roads. Some of these documents are a vehicle registration certificate, a pollution under control certificate, and vehicle insurance. You can keep these documents electronically if you do not want to carry papers in your vehicle.
- Traffic Rules for Two-wheelers in Mumbai
Do not ride a two-wheeler without wearing a proper helmet. Even if you are riding for a short distance, you must wear a helmet. Moreover, the person riding a pillion on your bike should also wear a helmet at all times when the bike is moving.
Riding a two-wheeler aggressively, overspeeding, or racing on Mumbai roads can lead to a challan. Irresponsible riding can be a threat to other commuters and your own safety as well. Therefore, it attracts a fine from the traffic police department.
There is no excuse for riding a two-wheeler under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances. Doing so can jeopardise the life of people on the road, including yourself. Additionally, it can result in severe penalties like fines and imprisonment.
Most two-wheelers are designed to accommodate two people comfortably. Therefore, if there are three or more people riding a two-wheeler, the rider may find it difficult to balance and handle the bike. It can cause accidents and injuries to riders and other commuters on the road. Therefore, do not overload a two-wheeler.
Do not jump traffic signals. If there are pedestrians on the road, keep patience till they have crossed the road safely.
Carry the vehicle documents and driving licence at all times. You may be asked to produce these documents at any instance by the authorities. Failure to do so can result in a hefty penalty.
How Can Bike Insurance Help You Follow Traffic Rules in Mumbai?
Insurance for bikes is a mandatory document that you must possess at all times when riding your bike in Mumbai. In addition to keeping you safe from legal tangles, insurance for 2-wheelers can protect you from the financial consequences of an accident or theft of your motorcycle.
Our Tata AIG long-term two-wheeler insurance plans are designed to provide you with sufficient financial coverage for an extended period of 2 or 3 years. Moreover, you can choose from the various add-ons available with the bike insurance policy to increase the extent of your coverage.
