How Do Safety Ratings in Indian Cars Work?
Safety ratings are assessments given by government and non-government agencies to vehicles. The vehicles are first tested in standard crash tests with specially designed dummies to simulate real-world conditions. The test results are used to determine a score from 1 to 5 depending on how well the vehicle protects its passengers. This is the safety rating.
The safety ratings and crash tests are key factors for potential buyers to evaluate and compare cars based on their crashworthiness and overall safety. They offer insights about adult and child occupant protection, structural integrity and the effectiveness of safety systems, such as airbags, seatbelts, parking sensors, ABS, etc. Global NCAP, Bharat NCAP, Euro NCAP, Latin NCAP and ASEAN NCAP are some well-known safety rating organisations.

Types of Car Safety Ratings in India
Of the different types of car safety ratings, Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP are the two most relevant systems in use in India. Let’s learn about them:
Global NCAP
Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) is an independent organisation that rates cars around the world. In 2011, the safety testing body was founded, and it gained prominence by publishing crash test results of popular Indian cars with the #safercarsforindia campaign. The GNCAP provides ratings of 1 to 5 stars, based primarily on the results of a front offset collision test.
For the crash test, a car filled with dummies resembling an average family is driven at 64 kilometres per hour towards a deformable barrier, simulating a collision of two cars of equal weight. The results determine the AOP (Adult Occupant Protection) and COP (Child Occupant Protection) scores.
The AOP provides a score of up to 34 points based on the damage sustained by adult dummies. The COP score is based on a 49-point scale and measures the impact on child dummies seated in ISOFIC child restraints. The assessment also considers safety features, such as side-impact protection, seat belt reminders and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
Bharat NCAP
The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme is India’s national car safety testing and rating system. It’s a voluntary new car assessment programme that began in October 2023. Manufacturers can sign up for BNCAP tests and get a valid certificate from the Ministry of Road Transport. Alternatively, the national body can randomly select Indian cars that have sold more than 30,000 units for testing.
Like GNCAP, BNCAP also provides star-based safety ratings of cars based on crash tests. The tests include a front offset collision test at 64 km/h, a side impact test at 50 km/h, and a side pole impact test at 29 km/h. The test results are based on three parameters, namely AOP (Adult Occupant Protection), COP (Child Occupant Protection) and fitment of safety features.
Vehicles have to score at least 4 points out of 32 in AOP and 9 out of 49 to get a 1-star rating. To get a 5-star Dzire NCAP rating, the car needs to have 27 points in AOP and 41 points in COP, as well as safety features, such as ECS (Electronic Stability Control), seatbelt reminders, side head protection, and pedestrian protection systems.

New Dzire Safety Ratings: Analysis
Here are the results and observations from the Dzire crash test ratings done by GNCAP and BNCAP:
Global NCAP Ratings
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire achieved a 5-star Global NCAP rating in November 2024. It scored 31.24 points out of 34 or 5 stars in AOP (Adult Occupant Protection) and 39.2 points out of 49 or 4 stars in COP (Child Occupant Protection). The 5-star Dzire safety ratings are applicable across all 8 variants of the 2024 sedan.
According to the frontal impact test, the car provided good protection to the adult driver’s head, neck, thighs, and knees, while the tibias showed adequate protection. Only the chest scored lower, receiving marginal protection. The front adult co-passenger dummy scored similarly across all areas except for an ‘adequate’ chest score.
For the side movable deformable barrier test, all parts of the adult driver dummy showed good protection. In the side pole test, all areas scored good protection, but the chest scored marginally. The ECS was fitted as per GNCAP’s latest standards and scored well.
As for the Child Occupant Protection, the 3-year-old dummy scored full protection to the head and chest areas in the frontal impact test, as the ISOFIX child restraints worked well. However, it scored limited protection in the knees. For the side impact test, both child dummies got full scores. However, the passenger airbag couldn’t be disconnected if a rear CRS was installed.
Bharat NCAP Ratings
In the Bharat NCAP rating given in June 2025, the new Dzire achieved 29.46 points out of 32 or 5 stars in AOP and 41.57 points out of 49 or 5 stars in COP. This Dzire car safety rating is also applicable to all variants of the 2025 car.
In the frontal deformable barrier test, the driver dummy received good protection in the head, neck, pelvis, feet and thighs. The knees got adequate protection, while the chest got marginal protection. The co-passenger received adequate protection in the chest and right knee and good protection everywhere else.
In the side barrier impact test, all areas but the chest received a ‘good score’, while the chest received adequate protection. In the side pole test, all areas got full scores. No child test dummy results are available for the 2025 sedan.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire Safety Rating Features
The one-of-a-kind safety rating of the Swift Dzire was made possible by its many effective safety features. Here is a list of the top safety features of the latest Dzire:
TPMS: The TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) is an advanced monitoring system that uses sensors to track air pressure in the tyres. It helps identify if the tyres are overinflated or underinflated, preventing failures.
ABS with EBD: The ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) is an anti-skid emergency system that prevents the wheels from locking up, allowing you to drive the car to safety. EBD (Electronic Braking Distribution) works with the Dzire’s ABS to automatically distribute the braking force for optimal braking.
ESC: The ESC (Electronic Stability Control) helps to stabilise the vehicle in case the driver makes sharp turns or abrupt movements. The Dzire is equipped with the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) for additional control.
Six Airbags: The new Dzire features six airbags for comprehensive protection. This includes frontal, side and curtain airbags that ensure both head and chest cushioning in case of a collision.
Three-Point Seatbelts: Another reason for the 5-star Maruti Dzire NCAP rating is the standard 3-point seatbelts for all occupants with seatbelt reminders. The driver and co-passenger seatbelts have pretensioners and load limiters.
Hill Hold Assist: This is an advanced safety feature that prevents rollback of the car on inclines. It applies the brakes automatically after you step off the brake pedal to ensure safety during climbs.
HEARTECT Platform: The latest Dzire is built on the HEARTECT platform that features a reinforced chassis made with high tensile strength and ultra-high tensile strength steel. It’s designed to absorb impact forces and maintain structural integrity during a collision.
ISOFIX Child Seat Anchors: ISOFIX anchors are designed to hold specialised child seats. They are built into the vehicle’s chassis to prevent forward movement during a collision, ensuring full protection to the
