What Are Safety Ratings of Cars in India?
Car safety ratings or scores measure how well a vehicle protects its occupants in the event of a crash. Various government, non-government and private organisations conduct rigorous tests on vehicles to understand how well their safety features work. These tests simulate frontal, side, rollover and passenger collisions and assess the effectiveness of airbags, brakes, ABS, and the vehicle’s chassis.
Based on the results of these tests, the rating organisation assigns a score from 1 to 5, known as the safety rating. This allows consumers to evaluate vehicles of different types and functions against each other. A higher rating means that the vehicle is safer and able to provide lower risks of injuries and death.
Types of Car Safety Ratings
There are mainly two types of car safety ratings used to compare the relative safety of vehicles. These are:
Bharat NVSAP
The Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Programme (BNVSAP) is an assessment programme launched in 2010 by the Indian Government to address the prevalence of unsafe vehicles in India. It is a tier-based system that awards 1 to 5 stars based on collision tests. Each vehicle gets crash tested at 64 km/h (40 m/h) for frontal impacts, side impacts and rear impacts.
To be eligible for these tests, a vehicle needs essential safety systems, like seatbelts, airbags, child restraints, and ABS (anti-lock braking system). Points are awarded based on three parameters:
Adult Occupant Protection (AOP),
Child Occupant Protection (COP), and
Safety Assist Technology.
Here’s what the scores look like:
One Star: At least 4 AOP and 9 COP
Two Stars: At least 10 AOP and 18 COP
Three Stars: At least 16 AOP and 24 COP
Four Stars: At least 22 AOP and 35 COP
Five Stars: At least 27 AOP and 41 COP
With this information, you can understand how the Toyota Glanza’s NCAP rating works.
Global NCAP
Global NCAP (GNCAP) is an independent organisation that tests cars worldwide in accordance with the United Nations’ safety standards. It started testing Indian cars in 2014 and played a key role in exposing the design and safety flaws of popular Indian cars on YouTube. In 2018, the organisation awarded its first Indian 5-star rating to the Tata Nexon.
GNCAP awards safety ratings from one to five based on standardised frontal offset crash tests at 64 km/h with biomechanical dummies. The tests are scored based on two parameters: Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection. A 5-star rating indicates the highest level of safety due to excellent cabin integrity, effective restraints, and minimal injuries.
Toyota Glanza Safety Ratings-Key Highlights

Top Toyota Glanza Safety Rating Features
Here are some important features that enhance the safety rating of the Toyota Glanza and set it apart from other cars -
1. ABS with EBD
ABS (anti-lock braking system) is a key safety feature on a car’s braking system that prevents the wheels from locking up during emergencies. It automates the brake pumping process, allowing you to steer your car to safety. EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) regulates brake pressure applied to each wheel, improving control.
2. Hill Hold Control
This feature activates when the car detects a steep incline using advanced gradient sensors and brake pressure monitoring. It prevents your Toyota car from sliding backwards by applying brake pressure automatically when you switch from the brake to the accelerator.
3. Vehicle Stability Control
Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) engages automatically during sharp turns or when driving on slippery surfaces and stabilises your Toyota Glanza. The system constantly assesses your car’s steering angle, wheel speed and lateral acceleration to identify when to engage VSC.
4. Airbags
The Glanza is equipped with a full set of six airbags to provide crash protection to all occupants. The front dual airbags protect the driver and the front side passenger, while two curtain and two side airbags protect the rear passengers.
5. Brake Assist
The brake assist is a key safety feature that enhances your Toyota Glanza’s stopping power during emergencies. It works with ABS, EBD and ADAS to detect when you apply sudden or forceful brakes and provides the maximum braking force to quickly stop your vehicle.
6. ISOFIX Child Seat Mounts
ISOFIX (International Standards Organisation FIX) child mounts are standardised systems used to anchor child seats directly to the vehicle chassis to ensure direct and secure attachments. The Glanza is equipped with ISOFIX mounts to protect younger passengers.
8. Front Seatbelt Pre-tensioners
Seatbelt pre-tensioners limit forward movement of the occupant, ensuring that they are securely fastened during a crash. Since front seat occupants carry the highest risk, the Glanza offers protection with front seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters.
7. Automatic Door Lock
The doors are equipped with impact-sensing door unlocks, which ensure that all doors can open easily after a collision to facilitate the rescue of passengers. The speed-sensing locks make sure that all doors are properly locked when the Toyota car reaches a certain speed.
9. 360 Degree Cameras
The Glanza is equipped with 360-degree rear and front cameras with Surround View, which displays the surroundings of the car on a 9-inch infotainment screen. This helps in moving your car around tight spaces and pulling out from a parking space.
10. Rear Parking Sensors
It’s a standard feature in all Toyota cars that detects obstacles when reversing and sends a loud beeping noise to alert the driver. This reduces the chances of accidents in parking spaces.
